iFi Zen Stream: Setup, Tips, Tricks...

Hello Friends,

I’m just facing some issues with iFi ZS connected to Technics SU-G700 with built-in DAC using USB. I already gone through the HW reset described on top of this thread but nothing changed.

Issue #1: Once I try to set up DSD Direct, it jumps back to DoP when saving the config (Technics supports native DSD stream!). I thought it should be a handshake issue between the ZS and the Technics DAC so I tried the same with iFi Go Link mobile DAC (same brand, no problem with communication, I thought). Unluckily the symptom is the same. Do you have any idea, what should be behind, and how can I solve it?

Issue #2. Hardver volume setting doesn’t work with Technics DAC. Considering that it works with iFi Go DAC (checked as well), I think it’s a kind of compatibility issue again. Isn’t it?

Issue #3: The ZS randomly switches off. It does this rarely, but it isn’t normal. Could the reason be the original power supply behind, came with the ZS? Will it be eliminated when using a quality linear power supply?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

As to the DAC issues specifically, I don't have any info on that for you right off hand. In regards to the turning off that is not normal, and could be PS related, you can check this by using another PS rated from 9-15v no more, and see if that changes anything.

While you try that I would definitely take a moment to open a support ticket and report these issues, you can do that here...

Let us know how you make out, please!

Cheers!!

Hello,

i also have problem with switching off, original power supply is ridiculous but that is not a problem.
At my house problem is with switching on and off lights in other room or hall, pay attention to it.
ZS is very sensitive on everything, like driving an alfa romeo you'll get to know problems you didn't even know could exist.

Hello!

I have reviewed this entire thread looking to solve a Mac-mini M-1/Tidal Connect/IFI Zen stream issue which is minor but annoying. I have received a simple work around for it from Tidal and Apple.

While reviewing this thread I was taken by members thoughtfulness and efforts to assist. As a result I thought I would to try the USB-A input for a NAS.

I have reviewed the introduction information and have several questions.
(Normally I would blunder through but as one error can result in complete frustration I thought I would ask the experts first.)

(Keep in mind I will not know what auto fills.)

NAS registration page before Scan is where I need help and where questions arise from.

1. Alias-I get it
2. IP Address of Network-Is this the IP address of computer or IP address of Router, or will this auto fill?
3. Path-“Music” listed-is this OK to use?
4. File Share Type-CIPS. (Or other?)
5. If CIPS-do I put user name from thumb drive or SSD?
6. If CIPS-do I put in password for thumb drive or SSD?
7. If no user name or password can I leave blank? Or do I need to put in Admin and leave password blank as in template.
8. Do I need to leave ON the DNLA function on App?

Broadly

9. Does Zen stream reload this data each time turned off and on?
10. Does anyone know the storage space on Zen stream off hand. I saw it once but could not relocate it?

I have only a .2 of terabytes so I should be OK

Many thanks in advance for any input!

Thanks for the compliments, we do try to help here as much as possible. There is also another thread here on the Zen started by iFi in case you should need to post these questions there as well, here's the link...

https://www.head-fi.org/threads/ifi-audio-zen-stream-streaming-elevated-to-a-higher-plane.958391/

On the topic of NAS I am not so well versed in filling out those sections, my "NAS" so to speak is inside my Roon Rock and is very easy to use that way so I never bothered much with the ZS settings in regards to that, others have and can probably chime in better than I.

You mentioned the USB A connection, if this is what your connecting your NAS or Drive, (I'm a little confused about where you're at with that) then all you should need to do is plug it into the top port, let the music library load and then select "Artists or Albums" this will load itself.

There is no internal storage on the ZS so yes each time you power cycle it "Checks" the Drive for any changes that have been made to it.

Hope you make out ok, as I said the simplest configuration is just an SSD or Hard drive connected via the top USB port, the other is a little more complicated, however, there is a function there to search for network-connected drives, perhaps it may find it.

Cheers!!

Sir,

Thanks for the quick response and information.

Trying to gather enough information in case I do make a mistake that I can correct it without too much dysphoria.

If anyone else has information on any of the other boxes and time to respond I am interested.

Many thanks in advance!

Best,

S

@Mr BubbaHyde

After over a year of perfect operation, I’m having some odd ZenStream behavior.

At times the unit freezes, after being on for awhile. It disappears from the network. And even though still powered, it cannot be turned off by the power button. I have to disconnect the power supply. Once restarted it works ok.

Last night after a listening session I turned off my Marantz SACD 30n, which is the DAC connected to the ZenStream, and the ZenStream shut off as well on its own, something that has never happened before. Normally I have to physically power off the ZS.

Are these power related oddities software related and might be helped by a factory reset? Or is it some sort of hardware issue?

I’m using a 12V Farad Super3.

Thanks

The first step I would take would be a "soft" factory reset from the settings menu in the app, same page as checking for updates. Then update to the current firmware, see if the issues reoccur.

I would still put in a support ticket or get one started just to see if maybe they have some reported issues like this as well.

The last thing I would try is swapping power supplies, even though you are using a very good one, just to eliminate possibilities.

Let us know how you make out after the reset! No need for the first post "hard" reset yet, at least in my opinion.

Cheers!!

Super, I’ll give it a whirl. It has worked fine with the Farad for months. If it comes down to one or the other, I’m keeping the Farad!

Where do I submit a ticket? Outside of this forum, I have been largely unsuccessful at contacting iFi directly in the past.

Hi,
I've seen many comments suggesting that an LPS would further improve the SQ of the IFI Z S. I have a 12v 10a LPS that I intend to use when the device that I've ordered arrives. Kindly confirm that I can safely use this LPS. As I understand 10a is more than needed, but if the device demands only 2a, the rest is not supplied by the LPS. Is my understanding correct? Thanks.

Hi, I use the ZS to listen to Qobuz (with mconnect app) and files on usb hdd. Currently the system selector is set to 1 (all-in-one). If I set it to 5 (DLNA only) would I get any sound improvements? And would it always be possible to listen to files on usb hdd?
