iFi Zen Stream: Setup, Tips, Tricks...
Jan 23, 2022 at 5:04 AM Post #31 of 1,607
so yesterday. the app would connect and then disconnect?

I finally got into settings. and turn hot spot off.

So I get up this morning and it works?????

Sound wise for 399 plus 12volt ifs power. Its closer to my 2800$ lumin mini with booster.

So. If this ifs is stable and works. Its amazing for 500 dollars. But if it works when it wants to. a huge loss for budget gear that's sounds awesome.

Even my wife thought at first it was the lumin playing. So it passes the wife test for sound quality

Exactly, ZEN Stream really can go toe to toe with pricier competitors, but it doesn't need a big enclosure to do that and its retail price makes it this much more attractive

I just hooked up a UpTone Lps 1.2 power supply.

Oh my. Its so closed to my lumin u1 mini with sbooster. Its like 95-97% of lumin. I don't feel like I have to save up for another lumin. Its that close. and I save 2K

:)

That's awesome!! I love mine so much that I finally decided to sell my Cambridge that I rarely ever use anymore! 🤣

Post a link to the power supply when you can!

Cheers!!

Just put a Sbooster on my Ifi streamer. Even more sound quality out of the ifs streamer.
So you like the SBooster more than the Uptone with your Zen Stream?

the Uptone is 12 volts at 1.2 amps. where the Booster is 12 3 amps. So maybe the Booster can handle the draw better since it is over powered.. Yes you can meet the the requirements of the power. With a close power supply. But if your Power supply is so over rated. it just handles power better. Nothing is stressed.

I never believed in power until my deal took me from the bottom. cheap parts to the top of parts.

Just a note. Uptone. Lps1.2. is meant for like usb regen. Etheregen Yes it works on a streamer. but not it intended design. ????

I might be wrong. But on those kind of devices. the Uptone lps1.2 is awesome.

I ordered another Booster for my ifs steamer. That's how much better I think it works. Just my ears. MY 2 cents

Did you order another 12V SBooster or the 15V one?

I contacted SBooster and I was told both will work.
My dealer suggests 12V... but some are saying 15V is better so I'm a bit confused.

PS : I heard the 12V SBooster with the Zen Stream at my dealer and honestly, I was VERY surprised. The difference in SQ vs the generic / stock power supply was much greater than expected.

Good advice, and very easy to follow. Nice work. 👍👍

At first I had a few issues with my ZS losing connection, or not working with Tidal, but after installing the latest updates, as they appear, it’s been working with no problems for months. I’m using it with Tidal, Spotify, and via Mconnect, Qobuz.
I thought I would start this thread for those that are having issues with their ZS, and hopefully connect with other ZS owners that aren't having issues, as well as post some guidance for new users.

**This Thread is not for bashing/complaints of @iFi audio or the product**

Again I am starting this for those who need help getting theirs working as flawlessly as myself and many others have had since day one.

I'll start this thread with my ZS setup procedure for those having Setup/Inconsistent signal streaming issues, this procedure has worked for many, many people, just follow what it says and hopefully your issues will be resolved!

==========================================================================================

Zen Stream Start over steps!

Please read this thru before starting, PLEASE all the way thru!!

I would prefer you don’t do this procedure if you are using a 9v power supply, "and" are having any issues with powering on, or the Zen Stream randomly shutting off (rarity, but has happened).

The Zen stream can handle 9-15v power supply’s so simply get one from another unit, I prefer 12v or 15v myself, but 12v is in the middle of the power range.

**Procedure** SLOW DOWN AND FOLLOW THE STEPS!!

You should do this with an ethernet cable directly connected to your modem. NO WIFI, No WIFI Extenders, a direct connection if at all possible.

We are going to do a hard reset, there’s a button on the back of the unit, it’s a little pinhole, you’ll need a paperclip, Toothpick, something like that.

When you’re ready, Power on your ZEN Stream. Press and hold the reset button, located on the back of the device, for 2 seconds,..2 SECONDS no more no less, 1, 1000, 2, 1000 let go.

Let it sit for a bit, when everything looks normal just turn the unit off, power down, if it didn’t do it by itself.

Ok connect your Ethernet line, power line (if you disconnected it) and then power on the unit. You can open the ifi app or ifi.local, whichever is more convenient for you, I prefer the browser for this reset procedure.

*NOTE*

If your hotspot button is flashing, that’s the one on the right face of the Zen Stream, I need you to go into your network settings FIRST and disable Hotspot before moving forward with anything. Make sure this is disabled and after a save leave the network tab and go back in and make sure it is disabled. You can also verify this by the light, it should not be on, or blinking.

Once the app (or interface) is open and ready go to your settings, (home button and little gear icon down the bottom right on the app, in your browser it’s on the left. Open the network page, refresh your wireless settings if they are there.

Proceed with the wireless setup thru the menu, not thru "hotspot"and keep in mind you must hit save on each step, very important! When you do you should see a little indicator box somewhere (lol) that say changes saved unit restarting/updating.

Be sure to let each menu change save completely before doing another! I usually take a sip of my favorite beverage each time!!!

Once that is done, power down the unit. Take it wherever you want to use it at, and set it up. Power it on, give it time, and you “Should” be good to go.

Hope this works for you as it has for many others. If not the issue may very well be the power supply.
Contact iFi support and open a ticket.

==========================================================================================

If you notice I am not worried about firmware, hard drives, none of that. First we need to get your unit up, running, and stable, then we can worry about all that Jazz.

I have found this is the best way to resolve most issues. If you’re sitting there saying I can’t connect it directly to my internet, the modem is not in the room where I am going to use it, I will say don’t be lazy…

Cheers!!

Hopefully this will solve most missed steps and setup issues for new owners. It may even help if you are having random issues with the Zen Stream to do this procedure.
One question : My ZS is ethernet connected, I put all sources / toggles 'off' in the IFI app except Tidal, I use the Tidal mode (3) on the ZS and everything is working fine. However, I do not have access to the IFI app when the ZS is in Tidal mode. If I want to use the IFI app (for updates), I have to return to the 'All in one' mode (1) on the ZS. Is it normal? Did I miss something? Thanks...

12 volt booster. Mostly because I have other devices that use 12 volt. I don't own many 15 volt. So I wanted to be able to move the SBooster around if needed.

Plus I had one already so. I knew I like the 12 volt sound. When in dedicated modes with the 5 position dial you loose the IFI app access.

I made a post if anyone heard a sound difference between dedicated or AIO setting. Still waiting for a sound comparison.
