iFi ZEN DAC discussion + impression
Dec 15, 2021 at 5:37 PM Post #1,321 of 1,761
I got a reply from iFi support and wanted to share it here so anyone else with the same question can find it. This is not the full reply, just the jest of it.

From Support:

Thank you for your message regarding your Zen Dac v2.

The zen Dac v2 when connected will become your sound card and this will bypass your windows controller as you should be using the iFi driver 5.12.

This is to keep the signal as clean as possible.

The volume control on the Dac or Can will now be the way to adjust your volume.

That's useful and thanks for posting :)

Anyone got the Zen Dac V2 to work on a playstation 4 or 5? I'm on version 7.3B but when I plug it in, power is received but the device is not detected

It should work, but please ask our support here: https://support.ifi-audio.com

Thanks!

I got a response that 7.3 and 7.3C works, however, when I loaded 7.3, it doesn't register on my PS5, only 7.3C does.
I don't want to use the GTO filter, now I'm waiting for a response to see how I can get 7.3 to work with my PS5 or if there are any tricks to updating the firmware using the USB 5.12 drivers

Let's leave this matter to our support then, but I'll ask about it internally as well, thanks!

Hey!
I am using Fostex TH900 headphones. Which set should I buy: 6xx or HFM?
What is the difference between these sets, besides the fixed EQ settings for Sennheiser and Hifimen? Thank you))
But still! What to prefer for Fostex 900: 6XX or HFM?

Another question: before, the set included white IFI power supplies, and now - black ones. What is the difference? Which is better? Thanks!

Our iPower X (white) is quieter than iPower2 (black), so better. The first batch that included the former as a bonus is now sold, hence iPower2 instead that's still very good!

Have ordered ifi zen dac 2 and the ifi 4.4 to xlr lead primarily for running Adam t5v monitors for production and listening on Mac laptop.

Slightly concerned I’ll be missing out on a fuller sound with only usb power (will be powered via powered usb3 hub on an lg ultra fine display). Would this reported issue affect balanced out in variable mode from the rear? Or Is it maybe limited to cans especially higher impedance ones. I’ll also be using 250 ohm Beyer dynamics but less concerned as won’t be listening this way.
Thanks!

If you're running the XLR from the DAC to the (powered) monitors, it shouldn't be an issue. If you were to try to power 250 ohm cans directly from the DAC, then I would say a dedicated 5v DC power supply for the DAC might be helpful, or a separate headphone amp (like the Zen CAN).

In short, all audio products perform better upon connecting them to a clean power supply because power tha comes from USB is inherently noisy. Clean power affects everything inside ZEN DAC V2; its digital components, headphone section and output stage. That's why we recommend for it our quiet iPower PSUs. The difference isn't big, but noticeable enough for many people to consider iPower a nice upgrade that's affordable.

I just used this with my Andromedas today and they are overkill. Would getting an impedance adapter of 75ohms help alleviate the loudness?

You might try our iEMatch4.4: https://ifi-audio.com/products/iematch4-4/

Ths product will expand headroom and remove any hissing, which works particularly well for sensitive IEMs such as your Andromedas.
