I decided that both of these names should be given a consideration because they're simple verbs that stick to people's minds, and flow nicely with iFi's other equipments (iCan, iDac, iPhono).
 
One thing to note is that they're verbs instead of the current train of thought that iFi uses to name their products which is by using nouns.
 
I figure this is a fresh way to shed off the old skin and grow out from the "new audio company" reputation to a much more mature (maturing?) company. Though in all honesty, I wish iFi has plans to move away from the 'iThings' naming scheme and produce original and non-derivative names.
 
Imagine hooking up the iCan to iControl or iRegulate Nano.

basically what we have here is a simple load applied to the output of an audio amplifier...
 
In Electrical Formula Format the simple load is defined as " Z " 
 
So again, very simply what we have here are two different loads " Z" so with this in mind
 
the correct answer is:
 
ifi iZ/12db
and
ifi iZ/24db
 
you can also simplify this further
 
ifi iZ12db
and 
ifi iZ24db
 
and in engineering terms its just a 12db load (Z) or a 24db load (Z)

This is a naming contest for a NEW PRODUCT.  iFi states that "i" names are for PRODUCTS.

 
This is not a contest for naming a new feature of an existing product.  So, blame iFi for an imprecise response to the question.

It was originally designed to be a "Feature" (perhaps more "Aftermarket Sales Accessory" in hindsight but we got a little excited and ASA is too wordy) for existing nano/micro iCAN customers.
 
But we needed a name as "Attenuator" is quite boring and they not usually known for good sonics.
 
However, we received a flood of emails from you and phone calls from our retailers (more from the USA than elsewhere) that non-iFi customers also wanted to buy the iFi attenuator. Heck, you saw the page jump! So we have been blown away.
 
After getting a few stressed out calls from people like Music Direct, we are now seriously considering whether or not we roll these into production for iFi customers only OR for everyone. Maybe we should run a poll?
 
We didnt have plans to make it as a product because it was intended to be a nice after-market extra for existing customers but we now have to seriously look into this - because of you guys

Also reading though you post I'd like to add another suggestion for a name, "But we needed a name as "Attenuator" is quite boring and they not usually known for good sonics.", you could call it "Sub-Sonic" or "Super-Sonic", kind of has a ring to it.

Well you have to remember their first venture was not headphones but larger scale stereo equipment.   This headphone focused venture is fairly recent and to an extent they are still trying to learn the market, although their first entries have been excellent so far. This isn't always the case with stereo oriented companies but they are good about taking customer feedback which helps.
 
  In a way I think this approach is beneficial since they have already included seemingly simple features that many people would want, but most headphone only manufacturers are too purist to integrate.  I.e. 3d Holographic, Xbass, and now standalone attenuators.

Good point! Some background.
 
 
The nano iCAN has been out since December and so has the nano iDSD.
 
 
What we under-estimated is that there are a lot of customers out there who retain the use of their high-sensitivity IEMs. These were ones they originally purchased for their iPhone/iPad and when they buy a headphone amp, they still largely stick with the same IEMs.
 
 
Just as a very simple example, the iPhone outputs 15mW. Any aftermarket headphone amp such as the nano iCAN puts out 150mW. This is 10x the power.
 
 
This is kind of mis-match gives rise to audible "hiss" and a volume control that hardly makes it past 9 o' clock. This of course is the same case with just about every headphone amplifier out there.
 
 
Hiss & low Vol Control = less than ideal.
 

 
So when our customers enquired with us about the "hiss" and we looked into this more, we found many used high-sensitivity IEMs with the nano iDSD/iCAN.
 
 
Our retailers suggested aftermarket attenuators but they replied that they dont have a good experience of the change in sound quality.
 
 
Rather than politely ask the customer to buy an alternative IEM/headphone, we offered to make the iFi Attenuators for them to use.
 
So we made a few prototype iFI Attenuators.
 
Then a few of you kindly posted your reviews of them here on Head-Fi and then the thing took on a life of its own. And here we are now!
