iFi audio's worst kept secret: the hip-dac!
Sep 12, 2020 at 8:29 PM Post #466 of 797
At this point I'm afraid that the hip dac works just as amp with my LG G8S, like it does with my Sony NW-A105....

As per my above comment, I'm not so sure that's the case. But in terms of configuring mobile devices for MQA playback, I'm afraid I'm not any help (I avoid MQA completely).

edit: check out post #301 on page #21 here.

Are you certain of this? The G8S does NOT have a the ESS Sabre Quad DAC (Meridian tuned in all flavors as far as I know). I own a G8 and avoided the "S" model specifically for that reason. Though I've no idea if the regular DAC supports MQA unfolds; I'd be surprised if it did.

On the box of the smartphone there is written: MQA supported.
My problem btw is with all my devices: There isn't Magenta light. Only green light.
I've tried with LG G8S, Windows Laptop (a recent Asus Rog) and Sony NW-A105...... The hip dac never shows the magenta light streaming from Tidal Master tracks.

Re: the box image above. Ahhhhhhh... well that's good. So, yes the audio is tuned by Meridian and the G8S does have a DTS virtual surround feature (as well as an amp output boost option that shows up when you plug something into the 3.5mm jack). But it lacks the Quad DAC (if it did have it, it would say that in letters just as large on the box). So as far MQA is concerned I wonder if it can only do so for the first unfold, or whatever.

Honestly, this is a big reason I've stayed away from MQA. Others here can be far more helpful in figuring this out so I'll just shut up now. :)

Finally I solved the problem. I bought UAPP and played Tidal MQA tracks through it to the hip dac.... And... Magenta light appeared!

Does anyone try the Earmen Sparrow? I can't find a comparison with the hip dac...

Magenta LED on your hip-dac indicates that audio stream sent to it in fact is MQA and what it got previously from Tdal wasn't. And yes, UAPP is the app to get in order to send unaltered audio data (that's what MQA needs to) from a phone.

Hey @iFi audio , I was wondering if you could clarify something for me. I recently purchased the Hip Dac, and I am loving it so far. I saw a video review on Youtube saying that the Hip Dac uses an ADC volume control, similar to the one FiiO uses to completely remove channel imbalance. Does the Hip Dac use just an analog pot, or are there a digital reconstruction ADC volume control components as well? I do not hear much if any channel imbalance, only at super low listening levels, but I figured I would ask anyway since it was claimed by this reviewer.

In short, hip-dac relies on an analogue volume pot. Our X-range products (xDSD and xCAN) feature a relay ladder (fully analogue!) inside a chip controlled by a digital encoder.

Wonderful, thank you for the reply. I am really surprised just how much power this thing can put out, it's driving my Hifiman Sundara to crazy levels even on the 3.5mm output. I have yet to try the 4.4 balanced, but with what I'm hearing this thing could easily replace my desktop setup!

It is so much powerful that I can't use my ath-msr7b with 4.4mm balanced cable... LOL
