Love this thing but I can't keep a stable connection with my old Moto Z2 force... Not sure if it's the phone or the the cable. The blue cable into a PC works fine.

Any thoughts, thanks

Since hip-dac shares some design with ifi micro idsd bl can someone provide a comparison of those two in terms of SQ please. I know those are two different devices yet I find it interesting.

Can I join from Down-Under?

Which is... where exactly ?

I can't help you with that, but I believe that shortly we'll see such comparisons; in this thread and on hip-dac's product page in upcoming reviews here at HF. Stay tuned!

What are the differences between the usb-c OTG cable that comes with the hip-dac vs. the OTG cable that you sell separately? Just bought a hip-dac and was curious. Thanks in advance!

And now I can confirm that they're the same!

Also, if you'd like to know what Rafe Arnott of InnerFidelity had to say about our hip-dac, please (CLICK ME).

Portable battery life seems to be maxing out at just under 7 hours via single ended. That's with volume low enough to still have channel imbalance (accessibility settings fixes this easily), with XBass off and Power Match on low. Connected to iPod Touch, Hip-DAC runs out of juice before the iPod does.

It's otherwise a pleasure to have the Hip-DAC and it'll be a great addition as a portable DAC/Amp for smartphones, which is how I plan to use it in the future.

iFi audio hip-dac: Tech Note #3

Actively goes where none have gone before

The new hip-dac sports a dual-mono headphone amplifier with 4.4mm balanced wiring all the way to the amplifier.

The hip-dac offers balanced in/out to take full advantage of the growing availability of balanced sources and headphones. The hip-dac uses the W990VST analogue volume control with digital Cyberdrive control. For amplification, our own OV4627 amplifier chips (4 channel) are used to deliver exceptional sonic performance on-the-go.

This S-Balanced technology in hip-dac means that, despite the amplifier being single-ended, this delivers all the benefits of balanced wiring.

Why did we feel the need to develop this?

Let’s take a look. The problem with TRS connected headphones:

2.jpg

The left and right headphone shares a single ground connection. This causes crosstalk and extra distortion. The lower the impedance of the headphone, the worse the problem. IEMs, in particular, are heavily affected.

Balanced connection (can be TRRS though here shown with XLR):

3.jpg

Left and right ‘negative’ are separate, the negative connection runs all the way to the separate amplifiers and no crosstalk/distortion happens.

Balanced output Amp:

4.jpg

The second amplifier doubles both signal levels and noise/distortion, and so, such a balanced amplifier has more output but also MORE noise and distortion than an unbalanced amplifier. This perversely makes such a balanced connection LESS

IDEALY-SUITED for IEMs. However, a dedicated negative wire per channel makes sure there is no crosstalk between the channels.

Plugging in unbalanced headphones with a TRS connector instead of TRRS will not be compatible, it will cause distorted sound and may damage the amplifier.

Thanks for your feedback! Is there anything in particular about sound you liked?

On the Monolith 1060, I did a sighted A/B with the iPod listening to the live performance of "Working Man/Finding My Way" from Rush's All The World's A Stage.

It's immediately apparent that the Hip-DAC creates a wider soundstage and has better imaging. The 'professor's' drum solo is a much more 360 experience from the Hip-DAC, where I felt like I was a microphone right above the drum kit. Even without the XBass enabled, the bass seems a bit fuller as well, and I could notice this in the track intro. I also preferred the way I perceived transients out of the Hip-DAC as well.

Oh, I also meant to ask, in the literature that comes with the hip dac, it mentions the ability to download and experiment with different filters. Would it be possible to link to those as I've searched but not found anything. It may be, I just don't know where to look if I'm honest. =) Thanks!

MarkSubsonik "experiment with different filters"
This probably means the 3 different firmware's you can run on iFi , (5.2B) (5.30) (5.3c) that give 3 slightly different sound profiles.
The (5.3c) has a GTO filter and gives a dryer sound like a Sabre Dac (example Topping NX4).
The (5.2B) is more neutral but has a little less detail. These new ifi Amp/Dac's handle the treble ess's (Sibilant Sounds) very well.
