iFi audio ZEN Stream - Streaming elevated to a higher plane
Jul 24, 2022 at 3:30 PM Post #4,381 of 5,899
As a Roon/ZS user although I do hope a newer version is in the works, I honestly cannot see where this discussion of hardware shortfalls comes from! This combo, as is sounds fantastic and has already had reviews say it's already on par with those higher end steamer ( sound quality wise).

I guess I have great trouble seeing the need for all these super hi Rez up conversion enthusiasts, I fully confess I am not one, and have never heard any Benefit to upsampling too 1.21 jiggawatts, but as always to those that do...

Cheers!!🍺

Have a Brew it's way too hot!!
It’s unbelievably hot here in Austria - but listening to music makes everything better :)

The thing about a ZEN Stream Pro or whatever it will be called I think is not so much just about upsampling or having the most powerful CPU etc
Rather than on the basis of this already outstanding 1st version which in the meantime is working stable software wise, many are looking for the very best possible option in digital streaming / reproduction.
And spending a lot on devices like switches, musicservers etc. to reduce jitter and achieve less digital harsh audio performance.

I am sure iFi knows best what components and overall measures or features like AES/EBU etc. there are to create a Pro version that outperforms even more competitor products on the market.

Received Zen Stream.
1st thing noticed, it's a bit warm to touch during it's operation. Is it normal?

2nd thing - Unit came with a firmware dated on Aug 2021. After the recent update the UI ain't quick as was the old I felt. And streaming led is now yellow for 44.1 khz as opposed to green (which I liked) in the earlier firmware.

3rd - I am using coax with a high quality RCA interconnect (not 75ohm thing). But it works fantastic. So I should be ok or 75ohm cable mandatory ?

Lastly any good news about the Chromecast thing ?

Cheers 🥂

1 - yes, that is fine.

2 - What sort of feedback are you looking for with this question?

3 - You should be fine here as well.

4 - Unfortunately, I don't have any more updates on Chromecast.

Is interesting to see that many on the Roon forum also are asking for a „Stream Pro“ version. Think there is a great potential with even better hardware components and further software tweaking to compete also against Lumin & Co.

I asked our development team to see if there was an update we could provide for you soon.

I can't speak on any future products we have coming down the line [at all, even if they existed]!

At this time, I do not have any additional information to provide, but if that changes, that will come from our development team officially, and we will communicate that here.
Hi @Sebastien Chiu !
Do you have any information about the evolution of the ZS software or is the target reached for iFi audio (and no more major evolution like a newer Debian) ?

Just an update from my friend:
When using ROON exclusive mode there are dropouts on SPDIF for higher bitrates than 96 KHz.
There are no dropouts with HQPlayer.
Hopefully this will be fixed with the next firmware update.
I’m not having that problem over SPDIF in Roon exclusive mode. I am running Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi to the ZS and I’ve tweaked the buffers and sample rate switching delays a bit.

Hard coded IP address and default gateway or DHCP? I'd recommend hardcoding the ip and related information for the ethernet port setting in ZS as it seems to be more stable in packet delivery.

Ah he just told me the problem only occurs when doing upsampling in ROON.
Well, that I haven't tried that but if he has HQPlayer I'd recommend he use that exclusively in lieu of native Roon upsampling.

And check the HQPlayer version as Roon recently updated their plugin architecture or some such and there was a recommendation to updated to newer HQPlayer version to properly function within Roon.

Just put the infrared thermometer on my ZS which has been running since about 9am est. 85.9 degrees
I have seen it as high as 89, but for some reason running it on the iFi I powerX or the Ipower elite the temps have always been better than the stock that it came with.

FWIW

Not having any of these issues as stated. Tested quite a few today and no issues.

I am always curious when I see posts like this concerning changes in Buffering Etc.

In complete honesty I have never touched any of those settings in over a year, do you think it would be possible to post a screen shot to this thread of your settings? I am asking because for those that do need a change I would like to transfer the Pic to the Setup, Tips N' Tricks thread for others to try, if they are having issues. And myself as well!!

Cheers!!

Out of town but happy to post my configuration early next week when I return.

@Sebastien Chiu @iFi audio
It seems that for a long time there have been patches and images of kernel 5.x for the rockchip 33xx.
Is an update in the works or not ?

@Zaurux

You are off course way over my head here, but what exactly is not right that these updates you refer to are needed?

I have understood from the beginning that this "volumio" stuff was kind of odd, because it's not volumio it's based on Volumio and iFi "coded" it to it's liking for the product. (Yes I know I've got the wrong words there lol)

I keep seeing these posts and it makes it look like singing use Not right with the ZS system, so help me out and explain a little of what these updates bring to the table, 🙏

Cheers!!
