iFi audio Pro iDSD Signature and Pro iCAN Signature - The Pro range just got better!

As an owner of the Topping D90+A90 stack, currently driving mainly my Hifiman Arya Stealth Magnet (but sometimes also my dear Audeze LCD-2), I'm looking for my next upgrade within the system.
So I am mainly looking at the following 2 options:
1. replace only the A90 amp, keep the D90 DAC, and get the iCAN PRO Signature (especially for that sweet XBass magic for the Aryas);
2. replace the whole stack with the iDSD PRO Signature, to get the better overall bass (vs Topping stack), and also the 3 different amplification modes (especially the Tube/Tube+ part); after financial re-stabilisation, add the iCAN to the setup.

Which option would you suggest?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Received my iCan Sig today. The first thing I noticed is that the 4.4mm has the ****ing iematch which cannot be disabled. This is so annoying. Basically, all my cans are using 4.4mm cables, including Susvara. Now I need to add another XLR male to 4.4mm female connecter. God, the extra 4.4mm jacket is one of the reasons I consider this amp. IFI, Why on earth you didn't mention this on your ****ing product page!?
Here is the picture from their website: https://ifi-audio.com/wp-content/up...gnature-Connection-Guide-front_v2-600x350.jpg They clearly marked the 3.5mm as iematch output, but mentioned nothing about such for 4.4mm output. WHY? WHY? IFI?

You are right. This was claimed in this thread over a year ago and IFI still hasn´t updated that image. The iematch in the 4.4 output is only mentioned in the Tech Specs ("BAL 4.4mm Built-in IEMatch -18dB").

I see you also have the Pro IDSD. How much better is using the ICAN and IDSD together over the IDSD alone as a DAC/AMP? Specially, with your HD800, please. I use HD800S. Thanks.

My HD800s (yes, it is actually an S) is in my office with Gustard R26 and Burson Soilost 3XP. I tried it on iDSD alone before I brought it to my office. It sounds decent in my memory. I haven't paired it with iCan yet. Will do so this weekend and report back.

Hey, I hope you can get back to us with your opinion on how much better is the ICAN and IDSD used together over the IDSD alone as a DAC/AMP with your HD800S. Thanks!

Hi Joaco,
Rest assured I will report back. My workplace started a new building access policy today. It is a mess and I do not have access to my office during the weekend for the time being. I will bring the can home sometime next week to do the test. Regards.

I still haven't got a chance to test HD800s. But I played around a bit with my TH900 mk2. Surprisingly, I much prefer it with iDSD. On iCan, Th900 sounds a tad wider and maybe a little bit more resolving, but too bright, and a bit dry (with the warmest setting on both devices), whereas, on iDSD with tube+, it sounds noticeably smoother and more pleasant to my ear. Just something interesting I think is worth putting here. Also, another can I have at home is Susvara, and this one is a no-brainer. iCan all the way.

===
Some updates, with more listening sessions, I think it is inaccurate to call the TH900 mk2 dry on the iCan. I would say that the mids and highs certainly have more energy on the iCan, which doesn't play well with the TH900's V-shape tuning on certain tracks. However, the mids also sound noticeably more resolved and lively on the iCan. I would say the Th900 mk2 sounds amazing on iDSD and is a safer choice for tracks with a lot going on. It sounds even better on iCan for slow songs with heavy vocals, but can be fatiguing for long listening sessions.

I finally had some time with HD800s on iDSD. But unfortunately, for some other commitments, I ended up bringing iDSD to my office, and R26 back to home. So the following impression is based on iDSD → HD800s (C1) and iDSD → Burson Soloist 3XP → HD800s (C2). I will bring iDSD back home eventually and will come back here to give an update. Anyway, my thoughts on the aforementioned pairs.

The verdict comes first: I prefer C2, by a small but meaningful margin.

They both have ample power for HD800s. On middle gain with the volume set to about 40-45% on iDSD and 57 on 3XP, Hd800s got to a similar decimal on two chains. The first apparent difference is that the whole presentation, particularly the mids are more forward on C1, more laid-back and relaxed on C2. It is also noticeable that C2 had better control of mid-high frequencies. The details and resolution on both chains are very similar, but it sounds more polite, effortless and generally more pleasant on C2, whereas on C1, HD800s sounds more exciting and energetic but can be a tad shouty on some tracks. The bass is very similar on both chains, clean, fast not too much in quantity, this is a HD800s after all, you know the drill. And finally, because of the laid-back presentation, the sounds stage and the overall sense of space are definitely bigger on C2, but for some modern vocal-centric tracks, I actually prefer C1's intimate presentation, because HD800s already had a very wide sometimes spreading character, to balance it out definitely helps in tracks where you suppose to hear singers whispering into your ears.

To me, the overly bright and sometimes hissing highs on HD800s is the ONE thing I do not like about this can. So I definitely prefer a more controlled and laid-back presentation on C2. But if you like a mid-forward style of sound, then iDSD is definitely more fitting. That's my 2 cents on this. Mind me that these are very short and early impressions. I will update here if my mind changes along the way.

Great feedback, thank you! Very clearly stated. I'll wait for future updates.

In case you want to try it, I preffer the 18dB setting for the heaphone output. I think it provides more control of the HD800S. The filter I use is Transient Aligned. I preffer the Solid State output. I also use the 1024 remastering.
