That's pretty cool and good to know. I am not sure of the topology in the iFi design but I am guessing they use some sort of self biasing scheme so there is no big deal swapping different valves in and out.
I’ve never used the tubes much at all. Did you replace the tubes with a different type or manufacturer or because they “got old”? If because they got old what change in the sound quality did you notice?
I replaced the stock tubes in the pro iDSD with WE 396A / 2C51 JW Western Electric NOS Tube D-Getter. Certainly an improvement. Therefore I was considering the additional effect of new tubes in the iCAN.

I have had the WE 396A in my iDSD PRO. I tired a pair of NOS Tesla 6CC42 (not JJ--- the real Tesla from the golden age of tubes). They are 5670 equivalents. BEST sound I have heard yet out of the iDSD PRO. Especially in the tube plus no/low feedback mode.
Not that a new review is needed for the iDSD PRO... but I did a review to offer perspective on how well this DAC still performs today. It is still near/at the top for equipment that reproduce audio in the kind of way that creates an indescribable emotional connection and pure enjoyment that makes the hours on the clock seem meaningless. Please read and enjoy!!

Thanks so much for the review and detailed thoughts you presented here.
I enjoyed the section on filters and "taps" very much!
I have to finish reading this later but I thought I would drop a Thank you to you and let you know I am bookmarking it for future reference and reading!

Thanks for the recommendation. When I got the WE396A tubes, I was in doubt whether to put then in the ICAN or the iDSD. I chose the latter, thinking this would give me more combinations (I also have a Violectric V222). Any thoughts or recommendations? Maybe the Tesla tubes could be put in the ICAN, so I would be able to combine both
Ifi what is the max length of usb 3.0 that was tested? I need 25 ft
I am having trouble connecting a dmp-a6 to my idsd pro as the dmp-a6 does not recognize the dac on longer usb runs and I really want to use the idsd dac.

Yes, they are both active simultaneously, obviously, it's a full range output so frequency would need to be controlled with the Sub or other equipment.
