Make sure to be gentle when removing/inserting the tubes!

I picked up a pair of Bendix 6385 2C51 Red Bank Duet tubes in 2018 that made me fall in love with my iCan Pro headphone amp -- they have been fantastic, but they barely clear the height restriction inside the case. Not sure what the situation is like inside the iDSD Pro.

Received my 396A today.. These are my first tubes, I have no idea if they are genuine or not, would appreciate your comments?

I am in no way a tube expert, so probably not the person to ask. They look nice and from my neophyte perspective, they look real.

Yeah first time is hard, be careful!

Where you find Bendix tubes? They are ultra rare!
Hello,
This is the situation inside iDSD Pro... Are the tubes Hard-Wired? How much pressure is actually needed to remove them if not hard-wired?

@tushardas, Wiggle the tubes out of place and pull them out gently. It’s best to do this while wearing gloves as to not get oil on the tubes.

Hello Everyone,

Successfully assembled back the iDSD, It was tricky to get the display module plugged. After a couple of trial & error, I was able to assemble everything back. The first impression the WE's are open & detailed.. I'm assuming the WE Tubes were never used before and after few hours of burn in the tubes will settle down and bass will be little tight.

Will update after a week, will try to get 60+ hours on the tubes.

I use this MCRU/Longdog power supply
https://www.mcru.co.uk/product/regulated-linear-power-supply-for-ifi-audio-pro-idsd/
There is an obvious improvement in sound quality, but I found an increase in depth and smoothness rather than detail and sharpness

That power supply looks nice, but there are no technical details about it on that website. How was it tuned to power the iDSD Pro? What does it improve about the sound? How is it worth 500 pounds/640 dollars?

@iFi audio
Hi,
If you have not heard yet, the ROON service for uncertified devices will stop working from 21st Sep 2020. I guess my iFi PRO iDSD will stop working. Can you give us an update, please?

Thanks for this, I'll ask internally.

How is it worth the money, that is subjective isn't it? Most people would think £2500 is an insane amount to spend on a DAC. My idea of good value for money is Beyer 770s, I regard my Audeze LCD 2s as a guilty pleasure.

If you want technical details contact MCRU, they are very geeky (compared to most retailers) and more capable of answering than me.

The MCRU LPS made the DAC sound more realistic, because there was less digital glare and more subtlety in timing (I would say more 'organic' and 'fluid' in flowery audiophile jargon), the stereo image increased in depth. There is more detail, but it delivers this on a subliminal level, I recognize it on familiar recordings, but the extra detail is not forced into my attention in an 'etched' way. I think there may be more 'slam' with electronic music (a weak point for iDSD Pro in my opinion), I'm certainly finding myself disappointed less often, but because most of my critical listening is jazz and classical I can't put my finger on what has improved here.

They way in which an upgrade effects the overall sound depends on the rest of your system (forgive me for stating the obvious). Most of my listening is through amplification and speakers which would cost five figures if you could buy it new in today's prices, I also have a separate headphone amplifier. In the context of my system, £600 for this power supply is reasonable, but I wouldn't say it's the best £600 I've ever spent.

Daniele wants more detail and sharpness, this power supply makes an already smooth sounding DAC even smoother, so it might not be for him.

I regret that i didn’t provide context for my question.

I was not asking why a linear power supply in general would be worth $640. I own a similarly-priced Keces P8 linear power supply that works quite well with my iDSD.

I’m asking what makes this MCRU power supply, the first I’ve seen that specifically states it’s designed to work with the iDSD, worth its price in comparison to other manufactured linear power supplies. In my case, I wonder if this particular power supply would improve the sound beyond the power supply i already use?

There are other customized power supplies for other audio gear on the MCRU website that lack details about how they are designed to improve the gear they were for. It seems to me that information would be a selling point.

Or to put it more cynically, who’s to say they’re not just rebranding their general linear power supplies without any customization?

I do not mean to disparage this company in particular, but the general lack of information set off my “unsubstantiated Audiophile claims” spidey sense.

As you suggest, I could certainly call MCRU and get more details, but as a casual shopper in these days of online-only audio products, I prefer to get those details up front.
