That power supply looks nice, but there are no technical details about it on that website. How was it tuned to power the iDSD Pro? What does it improve about the sound? How is it worth 500 pounds/640 dollars?
How is it worth the money, that is subjective isn't it? Most people would think £2500 is an insane amount to spend on a DAC. My idea of good value for money is Beyer 770s, I regard my Audeze LCD 2s as a guilty pleasure.
If you want technical details contact MCRU, they are very geeky (compared to most retailers) and more capable of answering than me.
The MCRU LPS made the DAC sound more realistic, because there was less digital glare and more subtlety in timing (I would say more 'organic' and 'fluid' in flowery audiophile jargon), the stereo image increased in depth. There is more detail, but it delivers this on a subliminal level, I recognize it on familiar recordings, but the extra detail is not forced into my attention in an 'etched' way. I think there may be more 'slam' with electronic music (a weak point for iDSD Pro in my opinion), I'm certainly finding myself disappointed less often, but because most of my critical listening is jazz and classical I can't put my finger on what has improved here.
They way in which an upgrade effects the overall sound depends on the rest of your system (forgive me for stating the obvious). Most of my listening is through amplification and speakers which would cost five figures if you could buy it new in today's prices, I also have a separate headphone amplifier. In the context of my system, £600 for this power supply is reasonable, but I wouldn't say it's the best £600 I've ever spent.
Daniele wants more detail and sharpness, this power supply makes an already smooth sounding DAC even smoother, so it might not be for him.
