iFi audio NEO Stream - Sweet Streams!

I know the Neo is chock full of features and may take a while to dissect and play about with, but there are still next to zero reviews in the hifi press, or with respected prominent Youtube reviewers. Be interested to see what they make of it.

The Neo Stream is in the house (again)

So far so good......working perfectly so far via the opti-box connection in NAA mode in my desktop headphone setup. Given that the first one only developed connection issues after a couple of weeks, there needs to be some considerable time before I give it the green light.

Finally settled on a set of feet that I like for the NS, for those not a fan of the vertical orientation here are some pics and a link...

I ended up preferring the shape of these, and also the exterior matched the NS a bit better than the shiny silver ones I previously tried.

They are only connected using some 3M double-sided discs, so easily removable or changeable, lol

I am pretty sure these are it, I ordered them quite a while ago, and they do look the same, perhaps they were under a different name when I ordered them.

Amazon UK dont have these same pads - finding 30mm pads like the ones you have seem elusive. How flexible are the measurements, I can get these at 32mm, do you think would they fit the feet or do you think a strict 30mm is required? Or they have 25.4 mm ones too.

I would think you would be fine with the 32mm in essence they are just a very thin pad that is going to hold the feet in place so even if it was just a smidge wider in diameter that would be fine.

With what I showed you in my pic I no longer have to worry about sliding the NS when I push the selector on the front, one hand operation, leaving the other hand free for the beverage...:beerchug:

Cheers!!

Cheers, I'll have a think about it and see whether I go ahead straight away, or wait a bit. I've spent a fair amount of cash this month already by getting a NUC, a new pair of wireless IEM's, a wired pair of IEM's, and the iFi Go Bar DAC

Dunno if it's just coincidence or not, but since I did the Beta update the other day my Neo has been a bit flaky. I went on the web Gui and noticed it seems to constantly be doing wireless restarts. Sometimes the restart is successful, other times it fails and it gives a message in a red error box which disappears instantaneously. The other thing I've noticed which wasn't a problem before I upgraded to the latest Beta is that from various sources I cannot get any sound when I am selecting Analog, and using the internal DAC - the only source that it works with is Roon and I do get sound. If I switch from Analog to USB on any source i get sound!! The caveat to this I can only get sound from analog when selecting Roon from the menu, if I choose HQPlayer from the menu and use that for playback in Roon again it's only by changing from analog to USB that I get sound.
So to try and rule out that this is all related to Beta upgrade, is there a way of reverting back to the latest "normal" upgrade that is currently live?

Well there is some sort of improvement with the replacement unit using the hardwired connection, it doesn't frequently lose network connection or restart - so that's something. It still has issues however. I have caught the network light going red on just a few occasions for about 5 to 10 seconds before changing back to white when not playing, on the previous unit it would have stayed red until it was restarted.

Then there is the major problem - using it as a dedicated NAA with HQ Player from my M1 MacBook I started getting regular stuttering on day 2 regardless of the intensity of the up-sampling and filters used. At first I thought it was my MacBook that was having an issue with the processing for some reason as the Neo Stream worked fine for the few hours I was able to use it on day 1 and I wasted a lot of time trying to find the cause, only to eventually discover that it was actually the Neo Stream. Switching the NS to WiFi completely eliminated the problem and I can now easily up-sample to DSD256 with ASDM7ECV2 modulator without any problems whatsoever.

So that's it.....I'm sticking with WiFi. The opti-box was I guess a novelty option bonus in my initial purchasing decision as the main reason I bought the Neo Stream over other alternatives was for it's inbuilt NAA and higher sample rate capabilities over the Zen Stream, and using WiFi I am getting that. The opti-box is already back in the original packaging and in a cupboard, I am done with the hassle of hardwiring either via optical or ethernet. And just to clarify something - my network setup is not the issue, my iMac 27" that I am typing on now is hardwired and performs flawlessly as did my Aries and my Zen Stream that I have used hardwired in my network without issue in the past, the ZS is currently in my speaker setup working well via WiFi.

As long as the WiFi network connection continues to work flawlessly, I am happy. (fingers crossed)

One other bug that I have had in both units is that when I add content to my NAS and either update or re-scan in the web UI, the gear icon that is supposed to be in the bottom left corner does not appear.

^^^^

Interesting you should mention network connection, the Optibox, and HQP.

In the last 3 or 4 days using HQP with Roon I have had quite a few dropouts and I also use the Optibox. I should also note that I am on the latest Beta update that was supposed to fix dropouts. I am running Roon from a recently acquired NUC which obviously has nothing else except Roon installed on it. My HQP is running on a powerful PC that is mainly used by gamers (I am not a gamer! lol) and I do not use this PC for anything else although there will obviously be background tasks running. So my setup for streaming is fairly optimum for what I want to do as far as I can see.
The other thing that has started happening since updating to Beta is that the colour of the network signal changes from White to Green on the front of the Neo, and when that happens the music stops playing. Which is strange because Green is still supposed to signify a fairly strong signal if I recall the manual correctly, but it means I get nada music playing until I reboot the Neo. I should add the Neo is literally a couple of feet from my Router so should be getting a fantastic signal.

I'm still hopefully waiting for a poster more technical than me who can tell me if it's possible to revert back from the current Beta version to the latest live Production software to see if it can resolve this for me - also calling Mr @iFi audio again!
