iFi Audio iGalvanic3.0 - The Holy Grail of Audio
Mar 28, 2018 at 1:33 PM Post #421 of 745
I tried the sequence of connections suggested by Wyd4 but I still have random white noise. I will tried a PC laptop tonight instead of my Mac Mini to rule out the latter. If the white noise persist, it will be either an incompatibility with my dac or a defective unit. I will have to send the igalvanic to the dealer to test the unit because I don't have another USB dac at the moment.

Sorry if already in the thread but a couple of questions for @iFi audio .

1. Is the iUSB (Nano or Micro) redundant with the iGalvanic or complimentary?
2. If complimentary then what order of device is recommended in the the chain between the computer source (MacBook Pro USB-C) and DAC (Hugo 2). Isolation first or second?

I have the iUSB Nano but just not sure if I gain with the iGalvanic or just add unnecessary components (yes, understand that the Galvanic is isolating but does it otherwise duplicate the iUSB?)

CONFUSED!

1. In short, no, it's not redundant. Both iUSB3.0 and iGalvanic3.0 were designed to do fundamentally different things, even though some of their features overlap.
2. Not only our micro iUSB3.0 and iGalvanic3.0 are complimentary, but - when at work as a team - are our TOTL USB solution. And as for order, iGalvanic3.0 comes in before iUSB3.0.

Got my one of these through my door yesterday for review....

I have been very sceptical of this sort of thing in the past... but... this is legit.

Full review pretty soon... if anyone wants to have me try anything, etc., just let me know... But I can tell you for nothing that it isn't some sort of inaudible, theoretically better but practically meaningless money grab.

It may not be the first thing I'd buy, but if you have a system that your happy with this WILL make it better.

Anyway, full review in a bit... just thought I'd see if there's any questions you guys have that I can explore in my review :)

It seems that I found a way to make the igalvanic work in my system. Today I brought back the Micro iusb 3.0 in my system linked to the igalvanic with an Uptone USPCB adapter. I still got the intermitent white noise bursts. So I decided to put the switches on the Micro iusb from Iso Ground enabled to off and from USB power ON to AUTO. No more white noise after an hour of music. My dac don't need the 5 volts bus power as his Combo 383 Amanero card is self powered from the dac. I just wonder if these settings are defeating the galvanic isolation from the igalvanic and the purpose of having it in my system. I will compare with it and without it this weekend.

Solving grounding issues on any audio system can be a frustrating experience. I think in your case, it's multiplied by the fact that you have multiple grounding options on multiple devices. While it seems you have fixed the audio issue, I would make sure with iFi that your configuration does not put your equipment or safety at risk. It's probably not a big deal at 5V, but I would want to be certain.

So what is the position of the switch of igalvanic now?

It was too good to be true. After a couple of hours of playing time, the igalvanic started again to send strong white noise bursts. So it's now in his box ready to be returned to my dealer and unless he's willing to give me another igalvanic to try, it will be the end of my experiment with the galvanic isolation solution from iFi Audio. Too bad because the igalvanic and iusb combo sound really good together when it's working. Better than the already good sounding iusb alone. I have to admit that I'm kind of frustrated to not being able to beneficiate from the performance of the TOTL solution from iFi Audio. I will probably try the UpTone Iso Regen next.

Easter ‘Bug Bounty’ Hunt.
Hunt 'em, wherever they are...

Introduction

Our just announced firmware v5.30 is MQA capable and in one fell swoop, elevates legacy iFi products* with MQA capability for even more sonic enjoyment.

The MQA integration was a little difficult. It involved:
  1. Totally replacing the customised core code
  2. Re-apply tuning/core loading and
  3. Further fine tuning the firmware for even more precise allocated resource use in order to allow us to support MQA and 384kHz.

To bring all this to fruition required the combined efforts of the MQA and iFi software developers or a total of +1,000 programming hours to deliver firmware v5.30 (excluding testing on all iFi legacy units).

Notwithstanding, there may still be one or two software bugs we have not quashed – hence we would like to involve you, the customer – in the Easter Bug Hunt.

More details are to be found in this thread:

Just got the iGalvanic.

Tidal streaming/Roon/MacbookPro i7 > iGalvanic > Hugo 2. Some pops and pos and clicks when switch is in middle position. Goes away when up or down. First day of testing. More feedback to come...

@iFi audio have a problem with a new iUSB 3.0 Nano. it worked for a couple of days and now when you plug it into a USB (Mac/PC) there is an issue. Specifically the device has a problem. (as seen in Win Device Manager)

Both with a DAC attached to the output or with nothing attached. Wasn't expecting an issue if nothing was attached. (Both lights are Green) Thoughts??? Fried? Using the ifi iPower. upload_2018-4-12_15-34-20.png
