If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...

When will I learn not to JINX myself? 😫 The right side is dead. 😭

I'll quickly run out of filters.

They're not dirty, mind you. Clear black -- not a speck of cerumen. I clean my ears twice daily.

I wonder what happened. I used the HF5 for years and years, and never had to even think about the filters. Now? One of the filters for my ER4SR didn't work from the get-go, and the others lasted from a few weeks to three months. Did Ety change how their filters are produced?

And now it's the left side. 😫😭

@EtyDave There's a problem with the current filters. I used the HF5 for years, in muggy weather and at the gym, and never had to change the filters. Now, with the ER4SR, I have to use a new filter every few weeks -- it's barely been a month since last time -- and one was even bad from the get-go.

Does anyone have a frequency response measurement between a normal triple flange and a long stem triple flange? Does the long stem affect the treble response?
Insertion depth affects top end extension and how peaky the treble is. That said, if you’re already getting the right depth, then trying to go deeper isn’t necessary. Everyone has slightly different ears, but for me the newer style standard size triple flanges fit me perfectly and treble is extended well and isn’t peaky.

I think I found the reason for this crackling and distortion. If I pinch (sorry my English) the cable right where it connects to driver, sound is loud again. It still has little bit distortion. Maybe I only need new cable? Any ideas?

By the way, I contacted to Sir-Dave through personal message. Hopefully he can help. 🙏

Switch the left and right on the cable and see what happens. You should be able to tell at that point if the cable is bad or the earpiece is bad.

I got this email from them:

Thanks for getting back to us with this information! I am sorry to hear the troubleshooting tips did not help in resolving this issue. I can certainly check the details of your order and see if it is within the return/warranty period.

After reviewing your transaction, I see that your order was delivered on 2023-02-06 and is outside of reporting period for an issue. For products that do not have an included manufacturer's warranty, customers have 30 days from the date of delivery to report an issue.

If we had the ability to source for individual parts or if there was a repair facility for this item, that would be our first step, however these options are not available in this case. For technical issues that may be resolved with troubleshooting, you can try reaching out on the product discussion board for assistance from the community who may have encountered similar issues before.

Thank you for your understanding of this policy. If we can help you with anything else in the future, please contact us.
Have a great day!

Sounds so good on the ER4SR:

OK, so they are just kicking it to us for warranty support. That's not a problem, if you bought it from them 3 months ago, it's well within warranty.

I'll check with the mesh supplier, but I don't know of any changes to the material. The funny thing is that the HF5 and ER4SR use the exact same damper so, all other variables being equal, they should perform similarly.

Now, bad from the get go is something different. That almost sounds like it was contaminated before you got it. But, if it was, it wouldn't have passed end of line testing. It's very odd.

I'll see if I can snag some recent production filters and do a bit of research.

Insertion depth definitely makes a difference, but a longer eartip will change the acoustics as well. Going from a standard cut 3-flange to a fully uncut 3-flange will cause a bit of a peak at 4kHz and it will slope down from there, resulting in a bit lower output as it approaches 10kHz.

At least, that's what I remember from the last time I made that measurement. ;-)

Drop is so sketchy on support. Hopefully Ety make this right for you!

In fairness, they really aren't setup to service these. I assumed that they would handle replacements on their end, but it seems they just have it covered by the standard manufacturer warranty, which isn't really all that unusual. We'll get this sorted out for L7R.

It's a VERY different thing to tell a customer the product is out of warranty than it is to refer them to the manufacturer for further support. This type of arrangement (first 30-90 days by retailer, followed by manufacturer for remainder) is quite common, and Drop have been dropping the ball on it for years!

Furthermore, Drop (even when Massdrop, RIP) has a history of selling grey market goods (just ask Audeze!) that legitimately don't come with a manufacturer warranty, so it is doubly confusing for folks unfortunate enough to do business with Drop to tell when they are being lied to or not by so called support.
