Unfortunately, knowing how all my headphones behave with the desktop system (I have them of various types, dynamic and planar, with high and low efficiency/impedance), when I tried to connect them to the DX300 (but I think this applies to any other DAP), I feel a fairly evident decrease in performance.
Instead with the IEMs the DX300 brings out a musicality and a detail that no full-size headphone has ever given me; not to mention the low range, truly impressive in terms of cleanliness and depth.

@Whitigir I've ordered amp12exn for my dx300. I'm not sure for 100% but somebody said that it comes closer to 300 Max with this mod. Is it true or just some people's talks?
EX does come close for sure. I have known people who traded away the 3M for the 320 and EX

Baah! Save yourself some money and just sell it and all the amp cards. Get yourself a nice Shanling M0 for $100....

P.S. J/K  :yum:

Only heard the 300 Max when @davidmolliere had it, and liked it better than 220 Max. The newer version felt more suitable to enjoy high volumes.

Regarding DX300, I immediately enjoyed what iBasso went for with the CL dac implementation and AMP11 mk1, for the same reason.

Bought a 12 when it came out and kept it a good while but ended up discarding it as too 'dry' for my taste.

I had considered sending it to NPaudio, the feedback the EXN version generated here leading me to think I might enjoy it way more than stock version, but ended up selling it to a fellow french audiophile who had just received a C9.

Months later, and an EXN popped up in the classifieds. Curiosity got the better of me, unsurprisingly.

And tadaa :

Well, it is indeed totally fitting for my preferences. Same ability than 11 mk1 to make music bloom with louder playing levels, but first impressions also lead me to think that with 12EXN, well recorded music gains in dynamism and finesse in textures and tones.

Pleasure level is high. Glad I kept my DX300.

Great timeline story... :)

It is somewhat the characteristic of the DX300 in general that of playing a little precise and dry, but perhaps not very exciting. But this gives you more freedom with the choice of IEMs. In my opinion it is better to work for compensation, choosing headphones with a fatter and more dynamic sound.

Interesting. I consider DX300 a warmish dac, with my gear and playing level.

Also interesting. Other than those that might still have Amp11.1, I have not heard others say that they thought any of the amp cards sound warmish in the DX300.... Just goes to show that we all have completely different hearing. :)

This is also the sound impression I have with my DX312 with all of my IEMs from Aroma Jewel and UM Indigo to FiR Xe6 (very warm IEM).

Well, as my AMP11 is mk1 then I might have trouble discerning where the warmth comes from : dac or amp. ^^

I have this impression of a warmish dac using the mk1's LO mode to desktop amplifiers, which is different from the AMP12's direct LO implementation of course.

That DOES make sense then. Amp11.1 is known to be warmer sounding than either Amp11.2, or Amp12 IIRC...

About the 11.2 amp I can't say much because I listened to it too little and too long ago; but I remember when the 12EXN amp arrived, I noticed that the sonic signature hadn't changed much.
As a whole, this dap I don't hear sounding warm, but not cold either. I would say neutral.
An example of undoubtedly warm and sweet sound is the Dethonray Honey (nome omen), especially after the first half hour of operation. A dac/amp that I had and loved a lot, but that I sold because I preferred using a real DAP, like the DX300.

The Amp 14 module arrived yesterday afternoon at Jaben Singapore. Picked it up earlier. Swapped the amp modules and good to go.

From the word go, it sounds tubey enough. Nice reverb. Though it needs burn in for sure. It does seem to be less powerful than the Amp 11 or Amp 12. Will slowly enjoy burning it in. :)
