I had a mouse scratching at my kitchen trash bags at night. I put a mouse trap (classic kind) with a sliver of cheese, nothing doing. Then I moved the trap to just where the bags would be ripped open, and bingo, the next day the furry culprit was dead. It's all about location, location, location, not the bait itself...

...of a visit to the local zoo some years ago. We were walking along an area of outdoor enclosures along the top of a river bluff. At the foot of the same bluff were some big cat enclosures. I watched as a couple of people and their dog were walking toward the big cats along a path. The dog must have got the scent of the cats about thrity feet away from the enclosures, and took off the other way at something like warp speed! Your idea must work!!

But seriously my cat has killed many rodents and birds. I saw a mouse one time at home, my first idea was to sick my cat on him, bad idea. Cleaning up the blood wasnt fun.

Whatever you do, don't get glue traps. I had a college apartment a few years ago, and when there was a rodent problem you had to call the Syracuse "Fix It" guys to come and take care of it.

Well, this moron comes while we're at classes, and apparently finds a hole behind the radiator. He throws a few glue traps in there, and seals up the hole with a bunch of foam.

For the next two days, we could hear mice screaming in the walls. They were trapped, scared, and starving to death... it was so awful. And then the smell for the weeks after.

I once had to use traps, as there were mice everywhere it seemed. I actually found some re-usable ones that 'killed them instantly'. I was hesitant, but man 30 seconds after I put it in the closet I heard it slam shut.... yep dead instantly. They turned out to be a really good investment.

I use live traps in the garage during the winter. They work really well. And then I just drive the little guys out into the country and let them go. I don't think I have the right to kill them when they're only trying to stay warm.

Now there's some thread necromancy! Anyhow, there's one simple solution: cats. I always keep one handy and they're quite efficient at discouraging pests. If you have rodents in an area that cats usually don't go (e.g. crawlspaces and attics), set up a strobe light in there. Animals *hate* strobe lights and will quickly remove themselves. Be sure to seal up where they got in after.

From my own experience - classic mouse trap and use peanut butter as a bait, works a treat. Just remember not to touch the bait tray (or whole trap) with bare hands, rodents are aware of human scent...surgical gloves will do just fine.

I printed out miniature pornographic photos of fat, ugly mice, and posted them all over the baseboards
 
not only have I gotten rid of the mice, but my mother-in-law as well!

I just went through my first rodent infestation. As soon as I read about the hantavirus I went at extermination full tilt. Started with the classic traps, and these worked well for about 6 mice. Then they learned not to touch the traps. So I next went to poison. This worked and finished them off. No mice seen in three months.

The mousetraps and peanut butter did work really well by the way, just don't forget to check the trap every once in a while. The smell was pretty brutal.
