I just got my K501, to me it's balanced and neutral can. As with all balanced and neutral cans out there, it's good for a lot of things, sure it might not specialise in some particular area like some cans like Grado and etc, but to me it has an all rounder sound.

Top heavy? Hollow sounding? Bass light? Not at all for me. But it does sound hollow when I plug it on my DAP.

I'd be willing to pay the full market price for it before it was discontinued. But with the price I paid, I just can't think of a good adjective for it.

Personally, the K500s, which are said to be pretty close sonically to the K501s, sound too thin for metal. The music doesn't blow me away, which is what I think what metal/hardcore/etc. are about. But that is just IMO.

The K501 is a great headphone for more spacious music. When you want a kick in the face like with metal, it doesn't work as well. But then again, I don't listen to much metal.
