Elvis is the King. MJ was a hack. Sure MJ was a decent pop star but no "king". All the crotch grabbing and "hee hee" squealing like a stepped-on puppy...no thanks.  But if you like him rock on bruh!!

My friend, when we were in high school, used to do a great imitation of MJ grabbing his crotch and going "whooo!".  One day he thought it would be cool to do every time the doors opened while on a train one time and got told off by the conductor.

As for MJ, he was abused by his father for money and in the end abused by people around him for it too.

He just plain creeps me out! Look at him. Is he human, part human, extraterrestrial, or just plain strange looking?
His music was in the direction that the music moguls wanted it to be. Compare him to somebody like John Mayer,
or Dave Matthews. Their music have soul and depth (whether or not you like them). MJ's music was superficial pop music.
It was arranged to sell records and nothing else. Of course he had physical talents that I could never aspire to have, but
honestly, I don't think he was 100% human. He was a freak of nature.

Sorry. That's how feel. He was a genuine Sgt. Pepper or Yellow Submarine character.

Thriller had a good production and catchy songs and was fun at the disco, but I was never a big fan. Michael Jackson falls short (and Waaaay short as the "king" of pop) of being a real music legend in my mind because he just got so repetitious. The moves, the beats, just repetitious. I don't own a single album by Jackson, enuf said, I guess.

C'mon, be real.  The guy sold 110 MILLION copies of Thriller (twice the next closest best-selling album, AC/DC's Back in Black), 30 MILLION copies of each of Dangerous and Bad, 20 MILLION copies of Off the Wall; four Top 10 Billboard hits from a single album (Off the Wall); 28 Top 10 hits; 13 #1 hits; Thriller was in the Billboard Top 10 for a year and half... Michael Jackson is absolutely the King of Pop.  If you can't admit that you're delusional!  No one comes close in comparison.

Accessibility and widespread appeal does not an artist make.

Though to be fair Thriller is a great album. Not 110 million great, but maybe 10 million great.

my two cents ....... i absolutely loved Off the Wall , Thriller , liked bad,and only liked Black and white and Remember the time from Dangerous................ He is still the king of pop in my opinion , but he did not evolve beyond what made him famous in Thriller , That still gives him the title of King of pop , compared to Justin Crap , Britney , Myley Cirus (guac) Michael jackson was really talented.

Not saying that you purchased it for this very reason, but millions of people buy an album because, on the whole people
are sheep. They want to have what everyone else is having to keep up with "The Jones". The Media did an excellent job
promoting the album and videos, and in order to keep up with your neighbor, you had to but this album.
To put things in perspective, NYC has 5 top 40 radio stations that play the same songs all day long, and one NPR radio
station playing Jazz, which is truly an art form of talent whether it is to your liking or not.
You have hip hop artists living in mansions, lighting cigars with $20 bills, while some of the most talented musicians in
the world can't pay their electric bill. Is it fair? NO. But the Rappers are "playing the game" better than the jazz artists
who won't sell out due to their love of their music.
Look at American Idol. People like Daughtry was offered an lead singing role in Fuel, but Simon and company said no...
took away his original band and stuck him with other people who will help sell millions of albums. Daughtry sold out
(I would have probably, too) becausehe was told by Nigel and Simone to go a certain route. Now the fact remains that he
is making millions of dollars (a hard offer to turn down), but in reality, he sold his soul to the devil and is on the top of
his charts. But his music is bubble gum rock, to say the least. The man had gobs
of talent, but talent that wouldn't sell to millions of screaming 16 year olds who spend their parent's money on
albums and iTunes downloads.

That's just the way it is. Unfortunately.

Maybe because he's a pedophile?  Personally I found it hilarious this pedophile had to be relegated to his stupid pedophile castle.  Then he dies and everyone forgets that he's spent his fortunes in paying off one case after another out of court and on lawyer fees.

That aside, I just don't like his voice.  And for me a great artist writes his own lyrics, writes his own music, plays his own instruments and is either his own producer or is integral in the process.  While MJ did some of those, he did not do all of them.  That to me is not a great artist.

And I never once thought there was any genius in Michael Jackson.  Great he got a lot of hits, but that just tells me he was a phenomenal pop singer.  /shrug, couldn't care less about that.  When he died, I said, I hope there will never be a king of pop again, one was enough.  MJ can take that title to his grave and keep it.

on a side note: at the moment, I'd go for stranger in moscow and blood on the dance floor being the songs I'd be listening to for the moment :)

MJ was always an entertainer, not 'bout the other stuff, if you listen to the music, then the rest of the issues should be moot but yeah, everything else that happened was unfortunate, but he did transform and revolutionise popular music

Yeah I did search of my own and saw he did write some of his songs.  And some claim that he had some to do with the production work, but that's all hearsay.

Either way, I've always been more fascinated with musicians and producers which MJ was neither.  I never had much respect for song writers, I've never heard a song writer, where I was like, yeah this person's lyrics stand out as great.  Never once.

MJ was King of Pop and I hope there will never be anyone like him again, and not in a good way.  I hope that title remains buried with him.  I still cringe whenever I hear Thriller and think, how did something so terrible ever get so popular?  Also MJ did not write the lyrics to Thriller or the music.

everyone pays attention to different bits, just like how different people like an assortment of music; but like my friend said recently, people are rarely now paying attention to lyrics in a song. the general populous looks at the beats and stuff, and I don't deny that I am one of them, neither do I deny that there still exists people who love lyrics.

to make a song great takes a combination of things, but all that is debatable.

at any rate, you do come across as someone who really really has something against MJ. I'm not a great fan of his, but I can appreciate what he has done for the music so I'll leave it as that. To each their own.

Heh, it's not him in particular.  I'm tired of people calling artists, if I can even call them that, as having talent, genius or great when they can't write their own music, play an instrument or do production work.  And MJ is King of Pop and for me Pop optimizes that.  Recently read where someone that Jay Z was genius?  I was horrified, but whatever.
