I know nothing beats studio monitors, which I own as well, a pair of HS7s but portability is also something I like too, which means I produce with a laptop (I know, not the best thing but it handles the software good enough). I am just starting in this music making world. I have a SSL 2+ interface and connect the headphones through the dedicated outputs to power them properly (that's what I thought). I remember I adjusted my (metal) guitar tone the other day when I got the HD6XX because the one I had saved in the past was SO DAMN bassy with the Sennheisers. As soon as I connected the AKGs the tone sounded like a strident hiss now. I expected some variation of course but not this much. It's crazy how everything sounds kinda bass boosted. It might be that I got used to the AKGs since I've had them for 4 years and just got the Sennheisers about 2 weeks ago, but this variation makes me think I am doing something wrong. I tried them through the laptop jack and yeah, less volume, but as bassy as with the interface. What's really happening here? I heard and read wonders about the HD 6XX and how accurate and neutral it was with basses and mids, specially for mixing or studio usage because of their relative flat response.
After little investigating, I found out that the Sennheiser HD6XX do not necessarily need to be amped due to their high impedance of 300Ohms and sensitivity of 103dB correlation. I might just get a lower volume in the usual devices. I am not really sure this is true since the videos I watched where they talk about the Amps and DACs they always mention that the only difference is volume and small details, but they never talk about how much bass or bad eq sound you could get if improperly driven.
Thanks so much for reading! And if this has happened to you too and you solved it, what Amp or DAC do you recommend?
