Cable newbie here so be kind since the M Scaler Manual does not include the Hugo 2.
I am running a CD Player with Optical Digital Out to the Hugo 2 at present and I will not be Streaming. I am also using Redbook CD's only at this time.
Could I use Optical Digital Out from the CD Player to the M Scaler and then Optical from the M Scaler to the Hugo 2.
Or would it be better if I came out of the CD Digital Out coax RCA Jack with an RCA to BNC Coax Cable into the M Scaler and then a BNC to RCA from the M Scaler to the 3.5 mm Adaptor shown in the Amazon Link above.

You are best with optical from your CD player to MScaler. That provides the best RF noise break.

From MSCaler to Hugo2 the only connection that works to get the full 1M taps is dual BNC. You will need a BNC to jack converter. AudioQuest and others sell these for not much money on places such as Amazon. With the AudioQuest one you also need a pair of BNC to RCA converters. I will look for a photo that I might have . . .

If I had some native 768 files I could compare a RBCD downsampled version upscaled through the M Scaler against the original 768 file and see if they sound the same. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to make a 768 recording using equipment in my possession.
