Streaming man suddenly realizes he’s missed 20% of his video quality and 30% of his soundtrack. Sobs uncontrollably.
“Both” does seem like the obvious answer. “Ownership” is an elusive thing. I owned great music on 8-track, then cassette, then CD, now lossless rips. Movies I really liked we bought - on tape. Then, when DVDs came along...wow! Of course, they sucked compared to Blu-Ray. The 4K content isn’t all there...yet. But, when it is, I’ll be getting it from streaming services, because the internet connection has also improved dramatically from 14.4K to (for me now, at the same cost) 300 MBS.Man goes back to Harrods and asks the salesman why were you shaking your head?
"oh sir, because streaming is not mutually exclusive. You can still play high quality 4k Blu ray, but there's a world of content to discover"
Man goes back and yet instead of connecting his TV to the internet, - decides to stop paying for broadband at home and searches for a deal for dial up 56K modem access.
How long have cds been around? Since 1980ish? 40 odd years now?to play my VHS tapes I need a VCR. I have a bunch of cassettes too. I need a tape deck.
any chance of buying from one Harrods![]()
You are referring to how amazing wildlife documentaries look I presume.ps: have you seen what streaming 4K does to the environment?
I understand the allure of streaming and I fully expect to at least try it at some point but like @juansan, I prefer to own and control my music/content for now. I can buy used and even new Cd’s for a song (...see what I did there...) rip them and then have them to enjoy no matter what happens. My internet service is really good (when it works) but I’m in a remote location and there are outages. Streaming services require a monthly fee and, if I become dissatisfied my play lists will disappear. I already have a terabyte of music I enjoy and frankly haven’t even listened to all of it yet. On the other hand, the ability to access (almost) unlimited content is nice of course! Artists are getting the short end here and I believe it is actually stifling creativity; really good recordings are also expensive to produce so quality will deteriorate IMHO.does it stream well on a plane?
I'm being facetious there as I don't have any issues with it, to each his own, personally I prefer to own and store a copy of my music for when I travel (which isnt much lately) or poor internet.
I have also discovered (on this site actually) that artists get paid a pittance for streamed content compared to music physically sold (as a CD or as a download).
I quite often buy used CDs for next to nothing from Amazon 3rd party etc. Most of the time the CD itself is perfect (or rips perfectly) even if the case is tired - it doesn't matter as the CD is going in a box in the loft or shed. If the CD won't rip then it's easy to get a refund or replacement. A good 44.1/16 CD rip to WAV or FLAC is hard to beat - I've listened to hi-res and I'm not convinced it's any (or much) better.I understand the allure of streaming and I fully expect to at least try it at some point but like @juansan, I prefer to own and control my music/content for now. Of course this is another excuse to buy even more equipment but a decent streamer still isn’t cost effective so CD’s and hi Rez downloads from HD tracks it is for now!
Exactly! I have purchased used CD’s for as little as $1 from a local store that sells used records and CD’s. WAVE STORM A+....designed and made for the DAVE, BLU MK2 and M Scaler. Nick Bacon is a great guy to deal with too.I have a Dave and Mscaler with factory BNC cables.
Which upgrade should I do next?
Opto DX or Wave Storm BNC cables?

Yes 100% agree. I play my CD's from my Chord Blu MK1 CD Transporter connected to my M Scaler to DAVE and the sound either through my Speakers or Headphones sounds great ! Much prefer CD's direct to ripped CD's or downloads and playing via my Macbook using Audivana Plus even with this source being connected to my M Scaler !Exactly! Artists make nothing off that transaction. Nor if you then rip it and resell. Artists make very little from a stream. They made much more from the original sale of the cdArtists make nothing off that transaction. Nor if you then rip it and resell. But the more people that stream, discover and stream some more, the better the artists will do, as well as the whole industry.
And that brings it back to mScaler and the chain: the more incentive to increase the quality of masters and streaming services, the better the chain will sound through the streamer, mScaler, dac, etc. That is the future, IMO, not trying to make CDs sound better.
Agreed. But that is not the future and since no one is buying much but used CDs, it’s not a viable path. People need to be will8ng to pay for content (I.e., streaming) so that incentives for more and better content are there.Artists make very little from a stream. And yet there is a relatively large vinyl record and turntable market...we live in a strange world, indeed!Agreed.
