So I'm a college student. I drive my HD 600 with iBasso D4. Far from ideal but it was the cheapest decent DAC/Amp option at the time. Now that I see DT 990 250ohms on sale at amazon for $160 I'm slightly tempted.

A couple questions

1. How's the sound of the DT 990 vs. the HD 600?
2. Would the D4 be able to drive it?

Now that I've been thinking about amping. Here's another question. I've been thinking about getting a cheap desktop amp like the little dot mk iii, but I still need to get a decent usb DAC, for under $100, what would you say is the best USB Dac? And would MK III be able to drive HD 600 and/or DT 990 better than the D4? If not are there better suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestions. I should go to bed, if what's above is an unreadable mess I apologize and I'll come fix it tomorrow.

Thanks again.

While I can't comment on the DT 990 vs HD600, I can tell you the FiiO E7+E9 is the most powerful and cheapest DAC/Amp combo to date. Both together can be had for $200, and they can drive even 600 ohm headphones better than amps more than twice their price.

^ Probably what he said.  250-ohm beyers are harder to drive than HD600, I doubt the D4 would do well.

Just get the E7+E9, and DT990/600, and be happy :p

problem is that will be 200+230 heh :p

is the 600 ohms really that much better as to warrant a 60 dollar difference?

Honestly the difference between 250 ohms and 600 is very marginal. It's more of a satisfaction thing; knowing you have the best available. I have the DT 880 32 ohm because at the time I was afraid I would not be able to afford an amp anytime soon, and then the FiiO E9 was released and now I'm regretting not having opted for 600 ohms.

If you think there is even the slightest chance that you'll want to upgrade to 600 ohms; save yourself the trouble and money and just get it from the get-go. $60 is what? Eating in for 2-3 weeks?

Many ppl here say that 250 and 600 ohms are almost the same in the sound, and of course, the 250 is easier to drive.

So, since I didn't want to regret later and ask me forever "how does 600 ohm will sound?" I just got the 600 ohm version and call it a day.

Since I also have the K702, I was going to get the Fiio E9 anyway.

Now, let's hope someone that has both stops here to comment about them...
