To switch back you just need to follow the directions here.
To paraphrase:
1. remove the four screws holding the case together.
2. open the case and remove the four large screws holding the battery plate in place.
3. pop the battery plate out and disconnect the battery to ensure the player is off.
4. reconnect the battery.
5. Find the samsung chip and use a pin to bridge the 5th and 6th contacts from the bottom on the right side.
6. With the connection between 5 & 6 bridged, plug in the USB connector. After 2 seconds remove the pin.
7. Windows will likely fail to find the driver. I used the rockusb27.cat from \mycroft_tools_v216fa2\drivers\amd64\win7 found in the tools archive tools_v2.z­ip found on the page above. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit on an Intel machine.
8. After the driver is installed you can re-install the original firmware by running RK27Upgrade_Image
9. In the Image??: field locate the firmware you want to use.
10. Press ??(U) and let it do its thing.
I can't wait till this is a wee bit more evolved. Then I'll be using it for sure! Thanks again to those working on it.
Edit: I have a 602.
EDIT 2: A jar of cabbage smelling of anchovy has brought it to my attention that the original rockbox firmware page seems to be down at the moment. So I uploaded the tools folder here for those who need it. Thanks, kimchee.

With this solution it woks and the hm601 firmware is back
 
I was afraid to do that but it was not too difficult
 
i hope rockbox will have an evolution but until it happens i will stay on my original firmware now

Death and resurrection!
 
I installed RockBox (2012-01-19 version) on my HM-801, didn't like it that much (many functions not working) and when I used the uninstall method in the first post, it "died". What exactly made it die is not perfectly clear to me, but it could be that I unplugged the USB cable too early or that I installed the 2012-03-04 version of RockBox instead of the stock firmware.
 
After mourning over it's death a little I finally took courage and opened the HM-801 to do the electrical surgery called by some the "old and ugly" uninstall method: bridging pin 5 and 6 on the Samsung chip inside the DAP. I could see that the chip name wasn't exactly the same as in the 601/602, but I gambled on that it was going to be the same two pins ... and it worked: RESURRECTION !!!
 
Tronz was unable to help in my case, but by using the steps provided by Pudu in post #11 (quoted in post #66) and looking at the photo provided by makejoke in post #15, I brought my HM-801 back to life. Thanks to you guys!
 
Here is my extra info for those who might need to do the same operation:
 
1. Open the back cover: Remove the three screws on the side of the HM-801 where the Hold-button is (you don't need to remove the GanQi Bay cover). After the three screws are gone simply swing off the back like a door.
 
2. Removing the inner cover on the back: Now you see a big plastic back and in each corner there is a small hole in which there is a screw holding it. Unscrew these and lift the back up (using a flat screwdriver between the back and the sides will help).
 
3. The PCB with all components are now visible. Using a small flat screwdriver bridge the pins marked with red in the photo below when plugging the USB cable into the computer. After about two seconds you should hear Winodws say "ding-dong". Then release the screwdriver. This will make Windows recognize that there is something in the other end, but it won't prompt you with info about it. We are not done yet.
 

 
(You will have to open Device Manager in Windows to find the unit. However, in my case it turned out that it wasn't necessary to reinstall RockBox and thus I just went to the next step.)
 
4. Run the RK27Upgrade_Image software and follow the instructions provided by Pudu. Select the folder where you have the downloaded and unzipped firmware image and run it (as described by Pudu). Then you should see lost of strange characters running in the window and a pause ... and wait ... Don't do anything until a new window pops up showing that Windows has found a device called HM-801.  Then and only then the resurrection process is over.

Had my HM-601 slim 4g for a few days, decided to try ROCKBOX and now i have bricked the device!! when i turn it on there is a white screen.The HM-601 slim will not show up on either a mac or a pc. Opened the device up and it looks quite different to the regular HM-601, so am unable to bridge the two pins mentioned in a previous post.
   Any help to get this thing working again would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

It might help those who could help you if you wrote which version you downloaded and what you think may have happened. If it's the latest version (dated 2012-03-04) then you should be able to start the stock firmware by pressing the power button plus any other button.

I followed the instructions laid down in post number 1 along with all the necessary linked files. I believe it was the latest version of ROCKBOX. I have held down different buttons whilst pressing POWER ON and still no luck, just a white screen! I i e-mailed head-direct telling them what i had done, they replied within a few hours;Dear Sir,

Please try to update this firmware.

Well, it certainly sounds that way. You may have to do the same experiment that I had to do by gambling on which pins are the right ones, unless someone with the necessary know-how turns up in this thread. You could take a look at the PCB and the chips inside and try to figure out which chip is the one to do the bridging on. Maybe taking a good sharp photo of it and posting it here could be helpful.

BTW: Did you check both sides of the PCB?
Maybe you saw the opposite side of the PCB?

Also... Pin 1 usually has a small dimple next to it so can count from there.
