Hi. I have a pair of Sennheiser HD580 headphones and I love them. The ear cushions, however, are starting to get dirty and need some serious washing.

How should I go about washing these in a way that will be effective and without damaging the headphones in any way?

Thanks,

Washing machine. Gentle cycle. Warm water.

I clean the earpads of my AKG K701 by handwashing in dilute Woolite. Let them dry on the insect screen (to provide good ventilation at the bottom part) with fan blowing for a day. It works out great.

Clear tape works surprisingly well for removing loose dust, dirt, skin, hair, etc.

If you are worried about pulling the fabric up, use tape that's not quite as sticky.

For more stubborn things like wax and oily residue, (very) lightly scuffing the fabric with a fingernail loosens the dirt so that you can pull it up with tape or a vacuum cleaner.

But yeah, washing's probably the most thorough and gentle method.
