How Old Are Your Phones? Do You Use A Vintage Set?

... come to think of it, all of my headphones are at least older than 10 years old, and its not just the staxen and AKGs (I have a Sony mdr-v3 which has to be 15 years old at the very least)

My K340's are about 20-30 years old as well.

The cans that are actually in use here very quite a bit in age - my new HD650s aren't even a year old, and the ER-6 can't be older than 2, my HD590s are approaching 6 years, HD535s probably a year older (bought as NOS), the worn-out HD580s might be close to 10 years old, the 600 ohm HD540s must be at least 15 years old (more likely 17+), and HD420SLs close to 20. Now I wouldn't say that the oldest ones are great period, but HD540s aren't too bad midrange cans if you can throw some EQ at them, and the 420SLs are more balanced and natural than a number of current entry level cans (OK, soundstaging isn't great, probably due to the free-field EQ).

Oh, yes, I've got some vintage headphones. In fact my four best pairs are all circa 1980-85, all from German-speaking countries. My fifth best pair is a Koss A250. I wouldn't trade any one of them for any headphone available now for $200 new.

I also recently did a review on eight old European dynamic headphones, explaining how they stack up to one another and to the current scene.

Hail,
I have a Burwen Orthodynamic PMB 8(bought in 1980 new) that I use regularly along side of my Beyerdynamic DT-831, which is my primary set. My wife usues the Yamaha Orthodynamic HP-1(circa around 1980,Wualta or facelvega will know). My daugther uses the Yamaha Orthodynamic HP-3.

I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 801's OTW thanks to help from a head-fi'r. I do not know the age however they went into production in 1990 and are now discontinued.

Soon I will be trying out the models that facelvega covers here:http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=210305

Vito,

I nearly spit out my coffee laughing at that. (sorry everybody, inside joke about translating into German)

So you're thinking of trying out some of those cans I reviewed? I think we can probably find you something more interesting, and actually even better. I'll let you know if I spot anything interesting.

Stax Gammas and SRD-X. The SRD-X came out in 1979 according to the Stax brand history site. I've had them for about eight years.
