I owned a Rockhopper M^3 (OPA627s) with 24V STEPS for about a year and a half. It's a really good-sounding amp. I've ended up replacing it with a Purity Audio Caliente (discrete SS), which I happen to prefer by a good margin (for about half the price) with both of my main phones (ALO modded SR225 and HD650 with ALO 18AWG Jena Cryo cable). For the year and a half that I owned the M^3, I thought very highly of the SQ it delivered.

i'm curious. what differences did you hear between the Caliente and M^3? did you prefer the caliente because of its sound signature or its raw performance (ie. dynamics, extension, prat etc) or both?

My Sigma is coming in the mail tomorrow, I'll post impressions as to what all it changes, but I'm anticipating a cleaner sound.

A pumped up voltage M3 would be sexy...hehe.

637x2 and 627x1 in the mail. *crosses self* $60 bucks for integrated circuits. I wouldn't buy them if I didn't already know how awesome they sound. The AD8610s are pretty good for the pricy but I don't want quite as much aggression as I want detail.

Does anyone else here with 627/637 in their M3s want to offer their thoughts vs. the 8610s?

I have both opamp set (627/637) and AD8610 for my M3 along with many other opamps to play with. For my ear, it is not anywhere near night and day difference. The only way that I can tell some difference is immediately after the switching but after few days of listening, I no longer remember which one is which unless I peak inside the amp. However, if I have to pick only one set, I will pick 627/637 set due to its more laid back sound compare to AD8610.

does it really make that big of a difference? forgive my cynicism but i've realized that head-fi tends to exaggerate things a lot sometimes.

My sigma 11 just came and it is a very substantial improvement. Once I take a few pix i'll bump my review thread from my M3.
