i heard the x3 wont be much of a competitor in terms of sound quality to the dx100 or hm901? well at least thats what some people said...

Can you really expect it to reddragon? If they could manage to get that kinda sound out of their unit do you think they'd be charging this cheap of price?

realistically i agree with you but i want to be optimistic...

I think we all do, but getting too optimistic also leads to getting mislead, placebo and in the end disappointment. I'd love to get such sound out of a cheaper rig myself. If it can be done I'll be the first in line my friend.

true true, back to my last question, do you hook your dx100 to your l3?

btw, lee730, do you use your dx100 as a single unit or do you hook it up to your l3?

If I don't want to carry an extra amp around I'll gladly use it as a single unit while out and about. But a lot of the time I'll use my UHA6 MKII or T1 amp attached to it. It's a little brick I'll admit but still smaller than a 3 piece rig and I attach it to my belt buckle (can also fit in my pocket but will have to have an empty pocket for that). IMO the gains with the amps are worth it but not necessary at all. I don't really use it with my Triad however. The unit still isn't fully burned in so not sure if my opinion will change on the pairing yet. But I much prefer the UHA6MKII and T1 with the DX100 (Synergy wise). But on my Desktop the Triad is king (king of the dynamic range). Just no comparing them in honesty. It's not a fair fight.

what cable do you use for lining out from dx100 then? if i indeed get the dx100, i will probably like to get a lineout cable to play with amps.

Well there is nothing wrong with a basic copper LOD. You don't have to get pricey with them but I also do own a pure silver cable which was noticeably more expensive. But it will depend on the gear I am using it with as the silver LOD can offset things and add too much treble and mid emphasis making things fatiguing and possibly sibilant. It also does take away from the bass making it leaner. But on certain pieces of gear this may be ideal and in the end you get a more detailed experience. I find with copper things sound more natural, slightly more warmer with more body (thicker). Keep in mind for me even the Copper LOD can offset things depending on synergy but most cases it's not as noticeable or more so detrimental if things do go sour lol. Currently I'm actually using my Copper LOD. I guess to give you a further idea of what I mean when switching back and forward I'll actually turn down the volume when using the Silver LOD while on the Copper LOD I turn it up a bit more.

No unless you intend on using RCA into your DX100? I use 3.5 to 3.5. I got my silver cable from zeroshoe on ebay. I also have a copper LOD from Fiio and one from Tralucent Audio (which came for free with my T1 Amp). You can probably contact Tralucent Audio if you were just interested in the LOD. I tend to like using that one over the Fiio.

I have decided to trade my 801 in exchange of 901. I wanted to keep 801, but not anymore. It's not acceptable to my ears anymore.

Good at least I can see what you feel about the units in comparison :). Kinda hoping the DX100 is still superior to your ears so I don't have to jump through hoops to upgrade :P.
