HIFIMAN Jade II Loaner Tour

Don't get me wrong the headphone does sound good. It just isn't my cup of tea. Not everything sounds the same for everyone. For what it is and offers it's good, not great.

Seems you may like HIFIMAN Arya quite a bit more then, they pretty similar to the Empyrean - they really offer a sound I think would fit more to your taste! In our latest podcast, me and @dusty.ro discuss about this as well

I wasnt deemed worthy of this tour by HifiMan,but whatever....

you guys are discussing bass. Can you guys describe the texture of guitar notes? Is it smoothed over like Aeon Flow Closed,or is there some chunkiness to the guitar?

I'd say it is magically accurate. When it should be smooth, it is smooth, when it should be textured and ribbed, it is that way :)

Still quite neutral in quantity though

I still have, use, and enjoy the original Jade I. It would be great to try out the Jade II and see if an upgrade to the Jade II is in order.
Whether or not I am fortunate enough to try it out I want to thank HIFIMAN for all of your wonderful contributions to this hobby including attending and supporting past Carolina CanFESTS.

The Susvara is the only one that really interests me. That is one of my favorites, period. I love that headphone.

I'll be attending that meet and as a long time Hifiman Fan [I still own my HM901 and enjoy it] and current HE 560 v1 owner I'd love to be able to hear Jade 2 not just in my home, but to certainly see it at this event!!!

Put me in for the loaner program so I can compare the Jade II to my Focal Clear phones. I have an assortment of upstream gear - DACs, amps, etc.
Thanks for presenting this opportunity. This will actually be my first HiFiman experience. I will be attending Axpnoa in a couple of weeks and will be auditioning some headphones there.

First and foremost I would like to thank Hifiman for this home audition. It's a pleasure to spend time with gear before spending your money on stuff that you might sell and lose money on the minute you open that box. Onto the review!

HIFIMAN JADE II

Build quality - I like the stealth all black look on the amp section and headphones. Understated, yet the amp feels like a Panzer tank of metal design. The headphones feel semi-premium. Some metal and a lot of plastic. I'm not a fan of this plastic. It doesn't scream "premium" but it looks nice, I guess.

Comfort - Oh, wow, the comfort and weight of the headphone are absolutely great! Never felt any kind of fatigue. The cups are super long and big that I never had any fitment issues.

Sound - This system isn't meant for loud listening because it doesn't sound it's best. But late-night, low volume sounds like a group of Angels singing and floating around your head, not Devils, because, Devils are bad and Angels are good lol. Seriously, for this money that this unit costs it starts showing you what this hobby is capable of. Soundstage is nice and wide and deep and surrounds your head with blissful tones. I love it but, I miss my loudness "volume addict" here. Bass, the bass isn't quite up to snuff for me "bass head" here. It's nice and tight but it doesn't leave much in the impact department. That's the only thing I don't like about the sound.

Clear sound like this window below.

Listening to this system is like looking outside on a nice and sunny day and taking it all in and relaxing.

Guitar plucks and all of the sounds from my choice of rock music have a nice depth to the notes, vocals sound beautiful! Female/male I enjoy all of it. The imaging gets outside of the head sometimes, not as much as the Susvara, but I get about 60% there. I won't get into the detail of what artist/songs I played because my list is about 13,000 strong plus. I did revisit a lot of favorites and they sounded wonderful. I even heard "honestly" a lot of stuff in my music that wasn't generated using my former Focal Utopia "shocked" the headphone is SUPER fast. Every instrument and singers have their own place in the imaging. You hear everything so freaking clearly. I heard a higher level of sound "Estat" at Canjam, but this is a wonderful starting point for people who don't want to pay $10k plus.

Conclusion - I love this system for a wonderful night time listening and relaxing experience. For some reason, during the day I need some oomph in my music and Estat won't provide that. This is the first Estat system I auditioned at home.

Thank you for reading guys/girls and THANK YOU HIFIMAN! It was a pleasure. I even had friends listen to this and they were floored by the sound quality. I love Hifiman sound, I guess!

I’d like to give a shout out to HiFiMAN for lending me this system!

The Jade II headphone is the first electrostat that I’ve listened to. Previous to the Jade II I owned the HiFiMAN HEKv2. I thoroughly enjoyed its pleasant sound signature, but after a while I felt that something was lacking: notes sounded too soft for my tastes, too rounded and too laid back that kept me from feeling engaged. I felt like I was in a dream while I was listening to the HEKv2, but I didn’t like it. Unfortunately there was also some peak going on in the treble region that prevented me from really enjoying the music.

I can safely say that the Jade II has improved on the HEKv2 in almost every way, but let me get to the specifics of why the Jade II stands out to me:

Build quality and comfort – the build quality of this headphone is a blessing and a curse. The Jade II headphone is mainly made of plastic and the headphone uses the newly designed HiFiMAN headband system. I find that this headband isn’t ideal for the longevity of this headphone – I almost always hear the headband squeaking whenever I stretch it out. It makes me feel that I’m dealing with a cheaper, more fragile product.

However I think that this material was chosen in consideration to the headphones weight, which is extremely light. I’d also like to point out that I have an average head and I barely had to adjust the headband in order to get an almost glove-like fit. It feels like the headphone conforms to the shape of my head which is a really nice touch, like a plug-and-play type of feel.

Sound – if I were to sum up the sound of the Jade II headphone I’d say that it has an effortless and engaging presentation. I feel like I’m listening to the music as a whole, rather than each part of the spectrum being separated. It’s like each part of the sound spectrum is in balance with the other, blended and liquid-like.

The treble is beautiful. It’s smooth yet extremely extended. This is probably the best treble presentation that I’ve ever listened to. Zero fatigue, zero grain and one-hundred percent on point. I also think that the sound-stage capability of the Jade II gives the treble its omnipresence. The sound-stage is taller than it is wide, but it also has great depth. I can hear articulation from instruments in the high registers because I’m almost forced to hear it, but in a good way.

The mid-range is clear and coherent. It is full, and voices sound very distinct from the instruments. I feel like nothing is lost when the Jade II is presented with complex music. However, I feel congestion when the volume is turned up a lot – this is where I think distortion does become present. I believe that this headphone performs at its finest at moderate to low listening levels.

The speed and attack of this headphone is superb. Everything is given room to breathe, to show off and then go away into a black background. This also lends itself to the bass which packs quite a punch. Although the quantity of the bass is lacking I believe it more than makes up for it in other areas such as attack, decay and texture. From what I’ve heard electrostatic headphones lack a lot of grunt in this area and it seems to me that the Jade II has put itself on top of the competition with its bass performance. It’s there and it’s palpable.

Concerns – other than the build quality, I feel some may not like, what I feel, is the more intimate presentation of the Jade II. There are also times when sounds are so close that they lack definition and texture – mainly in the lower mid-range. Lastly, I do not think that the amplifier that this headphone is packaged with is worth it. I plugged this headphone into a Stax SRM-1mk2 and it sounded nearly identical. However, the amp IS built very well. Finally, for some reason I would be concerned about the re-selling price point on this headphone and whether or not there will be takers for it but hopefully these reviews will shed some light on this headphone!

Thanks again, HiFiMAN!

Just wanted to update the thread, I received the tour kit yesterday. I'm looking forward to spending time with it. Initial impressions so far are favorable. I find the sound engaging which is a great thing. Very fast sounding and clear at moderate levels...
That's it for now, I will post a review in due time. Thanks @TeamHiFiMAN for doing this tour and allowing me to participate. This is my first time hearing an electrostatic rig. so far, I like it!:sunglasses::thumbsup:
