I love how r2r2000 looks (including dot screen) and rotating volume control is pleasant
We have a modern trend to combine a smartphone and DAP in one device, Hifiman goes forth and detach UI from DAP itself. Surprisely I like this way.
I am totally with you on this one and those were the reasons for me, too, why I originally bought the R2R2000 (Red). But now, a few years later, I think Hifimans idea was great but the execution bad for many reasons. Biggest problem is/was the software. Those ideas only make sense if you can provide a proper software support. They should have thought that through from the beginning. But HMs software support is utterly horrible, that`s all I can say. Second was the missing support of several types of BT codecs instead of only relying on one (short - before - death - LHDC). At least they should have included a way to update codecs via firmware. Third was a missing
proper concept to use streaming services in HQ. Even though there are people in our community who still refuse it, there is no way around the fact that this is the future of music listening imo.
Btw, I am now using newer releases of BT dongles (see my signature) in a similar way as I was supposed to use the R2R2000 - and I must say they are
so much better in that regard...well, so much better in general than I would have expected them to be after having been a DAP user and BT refuser for many years! I would even go as far to say, sound (at least both in BT mode) isn`t particulary worse than R2R2000, just
different. Hit me, but even though R2R2000 Red has this really lush and emotional signature, perfect for vocals, little UP5 dongle does sound clearer (believe it or not...I have compared them side by side for hours! Have not heard HM1000 though, so I cannot talk about that one). In retrospect I`d say Delta Sigma vs R2R
to me is more about taste and genre. They both have their pros and cons. It’s just a different
type of sound. I know not everyone might agree with that, but this is just
my opinion based on my experiences....while being honest to myself (and for the moment forgetting about all the myths surrounding R2R and the price I have paid for the Hifiman).
All of that said, I still think the R2R2000 is/was a
sharming little DAP and I do miss it sometimes!
