I've heard more about the 545 here re the HE-6 than I have over the past 25 years on all other comments for that amp. Time to weigh in.
What does a 545 actually put out into 50 ohms? 15 wpc? About the same as my Rag 1 - well more than enough. Under no circumstances do I need to go to Gain 3 on my 6se or the 6 screw lent to me. 3:45 at Gain 2 is it for both - that setting would be about 13 db @ 8 ohms voltage less than max output (50 wpc @ 8 ohms). So maybe 4 wpc with 8 wpc for overhead should do it. The Violectric V-281 can drive the 6se & 6 screw very well.
I like Adcom's GFP-750 (still got mine) and the 535 from that generation. Always thought the 545 and 555 were too steely in the highs (on speakers) Never heard one with a HE-6, but with the excessive ringing of an un-modifed HE-6 treble, it could be scary. For the HE-6 one of those Class A integrateds so common in the 90's and 00's should do a better job (Yamaha, Sudgen, Luxman, etc) Even a rep-capped Haflter DH-200, Classe 100, Bryston 3B from the 80's or 90's should make for fine amps for the HE-6 if you must have a vintage speaker amp.
