Hifiman HE6-SE

I've heard more about the 545 here re the HE-6 than I have over the past 25 years on all other comments for that amp. Time to weigh in.

What does a 545 actually put out into 50 ohms? 15 wpc? About the same as my Rag 1 - well more than enough. Under no circumstances do I need to go to Gain 3 on my 6se or the 6 screw lent to me. 3:45 at Gain 2 is it for both - that setting would be about 13 db @ 8 ohms voltage less than max output (50 wpc @ 8 ohms). So maybe 4 wpc with 8 wpc for overhead should do it. The Violectric V-281 can drive the 6se & 6 screw very well.

I like Adcom's GFP-750 (still got mine) and the 535 from that generation. Always thought the 545 and 555 were too steely in the highs (on speakers) Never heard one with a HE-6, but with the excessive ringing of an un-modifed HE-6 treble, it could be scary. For the HE-6 one of those Class A integrateds so common in the 90's and 00's should do a better job (Yamaha, Sudgen, Luxman, etc) Even a rep-capped Haflter DH-200, Classe 100, Bryston 3B from the 80's or 90's should make for fine amps for the HE-6 if you must have a vintage speaker amp.

i own both hifiman he1000se and he1000v1 and I am fan of hifiman headphones

Would adding the he6se a great add to my collection, is it an impressive headphone

and for the price of 699 usd that is a steal

I plan to use them either on a flux fa 10 or violetric 590 assuming i will the violectric

It's got a live impactful feeling that the v1 doesn't. However I'm not impressed with the headspace of the 6se - its not very defined. Worst case you can probably sell it for $650 in 2 months if you don't like it. The HEK se kills the 6se, it's basically the 2nd best planar on the market after the Susvara.

...Oh yes, that dip centered at 1750 Hz on the 6se has to be corrected. Mods won't do it. EQ or an in-line filter will.

Also this assumes the current 6se's were built as well my gen.
How many dbs would you adjust up on 1750 with a parametric EQ?

Well for me, +4.3 is what I use. The Q is .80 which means its pretty broad. It doesn't fill what's on "paper". But if you go over 5 and esp 6, the mids get too shouty. I have 10 frequencies set. I can un-connect or connect any one I want. Only this setting at 1715 Hz really makes a very large difference.

Hz -- db --- Q

34 +2.6 1.0 (low shelf)
480 -1.6 3.00 (digital bell 2)
1090 -2.1 9.00 " "
1715 +4.3 .8 " "
3000 +1.8 6.80 " "
4300 -3.4 6.80 " "
9000 +3.1 5.50 " "
10250 -3.6 6.50 6.50 " "
14500 +3.1 2.80 " "
18500 -4.5 1.00 high shelf

It's not right, more work needed.

Got my HE6se yesterday. I plugged into my Marantz MM7025 (speaker tap). It sounds great but a bit boring.

Today I decided to swap the pads to the Ether Angled pads. Wow! more comfortable and better bass, and more fun!

It is kind of sad -- for such a good hp, why doesn't it come with better pads!

To give a fair credit to HFM, I have an extra Angled pads because I modded the DCA Ether Flow 1.1 using the ZMF pads, so HFM did not do a terrible job.

FWIW, ZMF pads do not sound as good as the Ether angled pads on HE6se :)

I’m using the pads from dekoni... overall improvement from the original pads. I’m curious about the Ether pads

The pali pads are plain crummy. The Ether Angled are the best pads I've heard on the round cup HFM's (out of 13). The HE-500 is the one I tested the most, but HE-6 6 screw, HE5-LE, 4XX, and 6se also got tested a good bit. That's not to say other pads don't do a good job. To me, the most overrated are the ZFM lamb. Over pumped in the bass, over damped in the treble and a microscopic soundstage - ucko.

Got mine today and no quality control issues and both drivers work perfectly. So far the sound is quite different compared to mine other Adorama v1 pair. Interesting.... In a good way.... :)
I have a set of the HE6se V2's as well. I'm trying to figure out this "different" sound compared to the V1 version. Can you describe a little bit more about the sound differences?

Do you use adhesive or the HFM ring to attach the Ether angled pads?

I'm really digging these, but does anyone have a desktop amp solution to power them? I am not feeling the SMSL SP200.
The Flux Labs FA-10 is amazing with the HE6se's

You can buy hifiman rings for cheap. Maybe not original but they are quite similar to the rings in Dekoni pads.
