Ethereal Sound
500+ Head-Fier
I'm almost done with my jerg pads. Not to toot my own horn but I think I've done a darn good job. All that's left for me to do is find my darn needle so I can stitch these bad boys up!
I am considering trying the alpha pads on the HE-500 with some jergpad-style mods. I was looking at a comparison measurement Dan posted between the HE-500 pads (pleather) and the alpha pads here (thanks to jerg's post on reddit). The two main things I noticed were the elevated 1.5-4KHz range and the shift in the 7-10KHz spike to 8.5-12KHz with lower output as well. I find it to my tastes to EQ down the 7-10Hz spike seen in purrin's measurements. It just sounds more natural to me that way. So, based on Dan's measurements and the changes seen from the jergpad mod, I'm wondering if a combination of the two would work well...
Hey Jerg, I just saw the new measurements. I see there's no more dip arround 6khz. I'm wondering if the back-vents have anything to do with it, or the mod without them already affects that.

You're gonna cut holes in the Alpha pads? Bold!
Pictures or it didn't happen...In progress pictures are fine by the way
No, the backvents don't have anything to do with filling up the 6kHz notch. A series of measurements was done behind the scenes with just the modded pads without backvents/tape, with backvents only, and with backvents/tape. Overall the bulk of measurable difference from stock is conferred from the core mods (damping holes and to a lesser extent velour top).
Devised another mystery mod today, the sound improvement is very promising!
Edit: here's a photo
The goal is to diffuse sway backwaves that would otherwise bounce off the metal parts of the driver.
Hard to tell, but is that the metal "grid" wrapped in velour? My interest is seriously piqued! I just increased the back venting with the sticky foam on my modded pads. One side was not open at all (bit of a dodgy job on the slicing and stitching, I think), and the other only partially open. Easy enough, fortunately. love Love LOVE these modded pads<=== oh yeah, I also have red grills now. A couple coats of Krylon Fiesta Red over the widest letter holder mesh I could find. Looks pretty sharp, if I do say. Passed the wife test
Keep us posted! Can't wait for your detailed impressions of the effect/improvement.
@jerg have you ran a frequency sweep yet and maintained linearity?
