Beard must help tame the high frequencies some

Wouldn't a silver beard enhance the highs and a copper/red one reduce them :)

Awesome beard either way. Puts all those hockey playoff beards in their place.

Edit. For those not familiar with hockey, growing a beard until your team either wins the Stanley Cup or gets knocked out is a long standing tradition in the NHL.

It uses two 12AT7 and two 6SN7 tubes. Very rollable and many choices. Very easy to change tubes and create the sound just right for you. I will burn it in with the stock tubes and then try some nice rare 6202 sylvania gold pin and some nice 1952 Sylvania 6SN7's. Both NOS and I have other varieties to try out.

I would recommend you the Tung-Sol 6SN6GT Round Plates/Black Glass and the Mullard CV4024 (it is a 12AT7).

Hmmm...suppose this means I should look for some of these tubes for my ZOTL...

I have a few sets of the Tung-Sol in NOS and also the Mullards. :^) I also have 5692 in NOS but they have never been my favorite and in some circuits they sound terrible.

I see 6SN7's when I google, didn't see the 6SN6GY...any sources?
Found a pair I had siting around, 6H2N-B, I think it says...there are 4 tubes in the ZOTL, these look to be the size of the smaller sized set (oh no, a new thing to collect/upgrade/obsess over!!!)

I think it was a typo.  I also have adapters I made to use 7N7's, which are all made by Sylvania and good tubes.

I hope this isn't a double-post but for those who are interested, there is a new "unboxing" video:

And I see 6SN7GT, Black Glass/Round Plate at one place for $150 each...

You mean the "6" was a typo, really should be "7"?

It depends. There are number of different Mullards. There are some on eBay at a good price and they are supposed to be matched and checked for microphonic.

Yes, they are expensive now. You could get some Sylvania 6SN7 for a lower price but there are many varieties and it depends upon your taste in music. I have the 1952 Sylvania, which are also expensive now as they made them for just a couple of years, some say just in 52. On eBay you have to be careful and deal with someone with a good reputation as people will package used tubes and so on. I have testers but even tubes that test new can be used and the top edge to that good sound can be gone. And sometimes used tubes can still sound very good. I have some Japanese 6CA7 tubes that have a few 1000 hours on them and still sound fantastic, in fact better than any of the NOS of Mullards I have in EL34 but for power tubes that is a real exception. The Japanese did a hard vacuum on their tubes, really worked on it so the tubes hold up well.

Yes, 6SN7

  I like the PSvane CV181 (just a label; it's a 6NS7).

Beautiful looking but but I like seeing the glow. They would not fit the amp mentioned unless the top is left off.

Before you spend a bunch of $$$ I suggest you check out the 6sn7 thread. It's a great resource and massive. Allot of people right now are buying 6f8g adapters from 2359glenn and reporting great results. If I did not have a bunch of $$$ already invested in a bunch of 6sn7's I would def. try it.

Sylvania 6sn7w is the most neutral. Hard to find but worth it to use as a measuring stick. Short bottle black bases will run you around $250 a pair, not as good as the long bottle metal base, but still very neutral.

Many of the 6SN7W are microphonic and often do not hold up well. A big investment for a questionable return.

I do agree though, that with some adapters you can get some great stuff.

And back to the HE1000 thread. I am listening to some classical on DSD and the HE1000 are doing great with the dynamics speed. Excellent.
