I paid $1000 for mine, and was able to audition it with HE-6s prior to buying it (Thanks José!!).

You are welcome. I will send you a PM tonight.

If you want a NP preamp you can go with one of the Forte series. They will match the Aleph great and they can be found for $350-$500 depending the model. The good thing is that the Aleph is single ended so you can go with a cheaper single ended unit instead of the more expensive balanced unit.

I've been on the prowl for a Nelson Pass amp since scoring a K1K earlier this week.  Do you mind me asking how much you got your 3 for?  There's one up on A-gon right now for 1.2K...I'm not sure if I should wait or pull the trigger.

Although..

...I should probably sit tight after this impulsive K1K purchase.

Congrats on the K1K!  I find they're highly polarizing headphones (people love 'em or hate 'em), but I do agree that they have great potential with appropriate amplification and proper positioning.  Any of the Pass or First Watt stuff should be perfect.

Sorry about your wallet.

That's a little high for a 3, but the 3 and 5 have been going for a bit above market for the last several weeks.

If you have a chance to demo a more recent Pass amp, you owe it to yourself to do so.  I love my J2 :)

Thx, and yes, my wallet needs a eulogy.

J2's a bit much.  (See above)

At this point I'm going to see if I can hold out waiting for a cheaper Aleph.  If not, I might grab one of the Adcom amps Pass designed.

I used to own both the 3 and the 5 with the HE-6. IMO the 3 sounds better than the 5 and has enough power to drive them perfectly.
A fair price for a good condition 3 is $1,000.

I am not sure but I think the only Adcom designed by Pass was the 555 which has too much power for the HE-6 unless you are going to use the adapter box.

If you're particularly price sensitive and don't mind a DIY Pass clone, Rawson amps often go up for only 40-50% of an actual Pass model on AGon/CAM/UAM.  There's an Aleph 30 clone going for $425.

Good to know.  I'm waiting for a fair-priced 3 then.

I guess I can't get the Adcom after all.  It's got the right amount of power for the K1000s, but not for my LCD-2s (or perhaps HE-6s later).  I'm hoping to hook up the Aleph 3 to my LCD-2, 4-5 watts is the kind of kick in the butt in needs.

I was talking to the guy actually.  But I'm a little wary.  It's conceivable that anyone can do a DIY Pass design, then call it "Rawson", right?

...what do you guys think?  The solder work looks shoddy to me, but maybe that's typical of Rawson?  (Who apparently has a good reputation)

I'll probably post a link to the listing in the DIY section and ask guys what they think.

We just a little mini meet with three Headfi-ers.  Myself, Happy Camper and SoupRKnowva.

I think we all out with the same thoughts.

It was all about the HE-6 in the first half.  We had 2 pair all together.

The source and amps that was used was.

The source:
http://shop.emotiva.com/collections/processors/products/xda1
I know we could have done better with the source.  The Buffalo III was not ready and the D2 didn't arrive yet.  So we was stuck with this.  However, the show must go one.

B24 - A monster of an amp:

2X Rotel Mono blocks (15+ years of age 125watts each)
http://powerampshop.com/rotel-rmb-100-monoblock-amplifiers-outstanding

First up was the B22:  It was Happy Camper and myself at this time:  This B22 is an amazing amp.  It does drive the HE-6 pretty good.  Volume knob at about 2 to 3 o'clock.  Sound quality was on par very good, soundstage was just ok, bass was good, the clarity was good as well.  The only thing about the B22 was it seemed to run out of reserves at higher listening levels.  Other than that everything was very balanced.  Overall I give it a C

Next up was the UP-2:  The soundstage seem to open up.  everything seemed like it was a notch above the B22 except for the clarity.  I think the B22 had the best clarity of them all.  This amp sounded good a high volume levels.  We used the volume control on the source. This amp had lots of reserves in the tank to go all the way.  I didn't think the soundstage could open up any more until we went on.  Over all I give this amp an B

Next up was the MONSTER B24:  WOW,  this is a beast.  Lots of power and loads of reserves, it sounds great as well.  Soundstage was about the same as the UPA-2, still I think the B22 had better clarity.  However, the B24 had more power than the UPS-2 and it showed.  This is where the Bass started to kick in.  A tab bit ore than the B22 and UPA-2 but noticeable.  Overall I gave it a B+

Next up was the Rotel Mono Blocks.  Man, everything just opened up even more.  I mean the soundstage got wider the bass got a little tighter, the highs was crisper,  These little mono blocks was doing the damn thing.  They get an A

Next, 300watts each of pure power - The UPA-1 mono blocks.  Meet over.  I have found my HE-6 rig.  I didn't know, it but I had it all along in the living room on my Home theater system.  SoupRKnova and Happy Camper talked me into trying them out.  Yes, this is it.  A+

What we found out was any speaker amp is what should be used to drive the HE-6s.  I could live with any of the 3 speaker amps.  Now the B22 will only unleash its power on everything else except the HE-6.

We also found out that all HE-6s don't sound the same.  1 had more base, the other was a little bit sharper.  Different phones - different sound.

Pretty sure the Rawson means it was made by Tim Rawson.

Did a Ref2 (6SU7GTY and EML 300Bs) -> BHSE -> SR009 (fully balanced chain) vs. Placette Active -> J2 -> HE-6 (fully unbalanced chain) shootout this weekend.  The HE-6 was just as transparent as the SR009.  The SR009 might pull ahead on certain tracks by 5-15%, the HE-6 pulled ahead on others, but the HE-6 had a more musical presentation overall, while the SR009 had a certain etch to it (similar to the HD800) that was unpleasant to listen to with some music.  Forwardness and impact better on HE-6.  HE-6 was more involving on pretty much every track.  Majority of music tested was classical, jazz, and acoustic.

Just going from J2 -> HE-6, the HE-6 had a bit of hardness/etch to it, but it's gone with the Placette Active in the chain.

HE-6 sounds inferior on every headamp I've heard it on.

Placette Active -> J2 chain is not practical for most people, and I'd be interested in investigating a more economical way to do this.
