Mine has been like this for a while now.
Hi all,
I took off the grilles of my HE-6 and pulled out the cotton stuffing behind them and put the grilles back on. It's hard to compare it side by side with stock as it's quite a process to put the cotton back in, but I think it could be an improvement - or at least different.
Does anyone know if there's any potential negative effect of doing this? It seems like a pretty common "mod," but I'm also guessing the stock HE-6 has the cotton there for some reason.
Prep,
correct me if I'm wrong but you did not do the fuzzor mod right?

There are definitely some differences right, with and without cotton. If you opt on removing the cotton with the grills on, then better mids but no soundstage difference.
For my experience
Remove cotton + stock grills = Better mids and treble energy…..but no improvement in soundstage
Remove cotton + open grills = Better soundstage mids and treble energy ……….but makes HE-6 a little thin sounding
Remove cotton + open grills + foz mod / j$ pads = Better soundstage mids and treble energy………….foz mod resolves thin sounding
together these mods makes HE-6 lively, dynamic, smoother without losing its transparency and HE-6 delightful mids
also It would be interesting to try adding cotton back while other mods are on, I did not try.

Ah, you were at the head-fi meet in Annandale!
Thanks for the information. I may also consider doing the "fuzzor" mod described here: http://www.head-fi.org/t/692494/hifiman-fuzzor-mod-driver-backwave-felt-damping-modification

Yes, I was the guy with HE-6 and Krell-400xi. hope you liked them
I liked your setup a lot. I know its much less exotic than a Krell, but I was hoping you liked my Crown D-75A, too. I've been listening to a lot of Infected Mushroom, actually, since hearing that track "Noise Maker" on your setup.
