HiFiman HE-500 (HE as in High End) Proving to be an enjoyable experience in listening.

Not much at this moment as I haven't spent enough time with the HE-500 but regarding the amp - mine is able to deliver to them 1.6W of rated power per channel. At full power, they play absolutely clean. I could hear in another room via open window the music played on them during burn-in reflected from another building roughly 15m away. It was totally clean and well articulated. I am sure these headphones would play clean at several watts RMS. They are significantly less efficient (read: the volume setting on a low output impedance amp) than Beyerdynamic T1 or AKG K701. I prefer their presentation and rate their quality a bit higher than the HD800 or the T1 but so far, they can't touch the Grado PS1000 in terms of holography and sound texture. They are also (sic!) heavier than the Grado and clamp on the head considerably.

The LCD2 just feel a lot bigger - pads are bigger, thicker, cups are bigger.  The HE500 felt more secure on and maybe that is why they felt more comfortable because I did not have to compensate as much to keep them on.  502g vs 550g is 10% difference which is a lot for someone coming from K240DF phones.

Aren't the LCD2 and the HE500 appr. the same weight??

HE-500 acc. to HeadDirect is 502 g (but in a headphonia-review it says that HE500 is lighter than HE6, which is also specified to 502 g..) LCD-2  acc. to audeeze is 550 g without cable.

Anybody care to weigh their LCD-2 and/or HE-500??

Yep, I ponied up to play this game as I had no way to try on the HE-500 before buying them.  Relied on the 30 day guarantee instead.  Plus the shipping back to China would have been cheaper for me since I live in Hong Kong.

I have posted a review of HE-500 (comparing it with Sennheiser HD-650 and using equalisation) here

Liked your review very much Plin. Maybe I missed but you didn't say anything about the weight. Do they make you hurt your neck?

Thank you! I did say that is heavier. My neck is used to supporting a motorcycle helmet, so no it didn't hurt.

Very good review plin!  I currently own a DACmini with the 1 Ohms Output option and I'm very curious to try the HE-500. But for now I enjoy it with the HD-650

Thank you Twinster. HD-650 is indeed very enjoyable with DACmini. I wish I had the 1 ohm option too (I bought it second hand, and I don't believe the extra expense of sending DACmini to US and back + 100 or so $$$ worth it). I suspect the lower output resistance will make bass on HD-650 even more controlled.

I just received the new 'version' of HE-500. The cable looks as it is the HE-6 cable. It is indeed flexible and light (one of my main complaints about the old one). A second 'leather' pad set is included. Unfortunately I missed the new reduced price

One problem though, according to HifiMan press release shown at Headfonia, the new cable should be silver. The cable I receive appears (judging solely from the colour that is apparent beneath the opaque sheath) to be copper!
