I am also on a budget.  That's why I bought the Emotiva and the Woo WA22 so I could experience both ends of the budget spectrum.  :D   It's all good guys!  Xmas is coming for a lot of us.

Yeah....

Im keeping my HE-500s to play with and mod no other reason really.  And I might have honestly forgone the whole thing if I had my JH13s at the time.  But now that I have those, at least I will be trained on an extremely neutral sound and can judge the Slant a little better.  Hell if it beats the Jh13s then I will be blown.

Away.

Someone here mentioned washing the velour pads a certain way to soften them - anyone remember what they said?

Warm water and soap, I tried it too, works well. Though it seems to not last too long... I think I need to do it again...

Ah, I like hifimanrookie, he is a good guy. It just irks him that I like the Lyr more then the 337se with the HE-500. All in good fun.

I didn't know anyone had a chance to compare them side by side. Pretty interesting considering the 337 is almost twice the cost.

...that you would be pairing with those world class CodeXs...so I dont see why you were lashing out against budget minded posts here in the HE-500 thread.  You should either get the audio-gd Master-2 monoblock and Master-7 DAC combo or the WA22/Master-7 combo to really get the most out of the those CodeX's =p  </joke trolling>

He is getting a custom made amp/dac which cost about the same as my car.

But it cost a lot of money, so it has to sound good! Also those Code-Xs

$700 for some modifications to a headphone you already own is really stretching it. For that much you could keep your HE-5s and buy a pair of HE-5LE or HE-500s and strike a great balance. But then again, I haven't heard them yet. Maybe they are worth $1200.

Just received my Schiit Lyr and I'm very glad I traded my Burson Soloist SL for these. I actually hear more detail with Schiit Lyr.. The synergy is just great I think. With the Burson Soloist SL I thought it sounded great but I felt the HE-500 could do a tad better. And now they do

I'm gonna stick with these for a long, long time. Also ordered a silver custom made cable by Headphonelounge can't wait to receive them. I'm almost set for life (or at least one or two years

).

I also found the full fledged Soloist to not match well with the HE-500, or really any ortho headphone. Or any headphone really. Except the T1, but that was far from a reference audio rig right there.

I own both, love the 337SE with the HD650s, love the Lyr with the HE-500. The Lyr is as good as the tubes in it, the 337 gets better with better tubes, but still retains the same characteristics as the stock tubes. Both are good amps, one is half the cost.

about the 337.... dont forget its porbably one of the most modified amps around..almost any owner lets it mod..and that amp reacts very well on those mods..and what fearless also says..the 337 reacts very extreme on changes of the 4 tubes (power and driver tubes) .. for the better or for the worse..the lyr..as being a hybrid is not that flexible i guess (only driver? tubes to be changed)...but i agree also with frearless on this..both are very good amps...in their own right.

about the code-x.. i cant say if its as good as some already say.,,as i dont have it yet...but i ordered it basically on the personal experience of a good (audiophile) friend of mine who listened to the code-x himself...and he said it was worth the money and much more! and as  i know he owns (owned) probably all high end headphones existing and is also a specialist in speaker land (he sells higher end stuff himself in the netherlands as a dealer)..i took the plunge... if i am wrong..its a very hard lesson learned..lolz... but my guts tell me it could be one of those secret gems like my modded 337 was (well is...its still not sold..)

I find the HE-500 to be a better match with the Conductor than the T1, the LCD-2, and every other headphone I've heard with it. Not sure about the Soloist SL as that's nowhere near as powerful, but I'm hard pressed to find anything wrong at all with the Conductor/HE-500 setup. What didn't you like about it?

^ He heard it with the Soloist the big brother of the Soloist SL, not the Conductor.

I would like to listen to the Conductor since I really like the aesthetics of the Burson products (and I like that's a dac and amp in one, saves space and cables). But it's a little above budget for me. If anyone wants to trade it for Bifrost and Lyr let me know

When I had the Soloist (not the SL, but the big one) I didn't think it did a whole lot of things wrong, but didn't think it really stood out as doing anything really really well. With orthodynamics my Emotiva A-100 was faster, smoother, and had better bass response. With the HE-500 and HE-6, I didn't think the Soloist was a big step up from the Matrix M-stage I had.

So the high output impedance amplifier does well with the high impedance headphones, and the low impedance high power amplifier sounds well with the low impedance orthodynamic driver? Makes sense.

I can't imagine the HE-500 having a better bass response than what I hear with my Conductor, but I've not heard them out of anything else so I really don't know. I am tempted to get hold of an Emotiva just to see what all the fuss is about. Sounds like it's terrific value for the money and if it drives the orthos as well as lots of people say then you can't really go wrong at that price. I suppose one of the main strengths of the Soloist/Conductor is the versatility. I change headphones quite often and wouldn't want to be tied down to an amp that excels with one headphone but is poor with others. The next amp for me will probably be the GSX.

Well I'm waiting a month for when I can hear some impressions from others who are also gonna the Quickie to use with their Emotiva. I don't want to rave anymore on the pairing because I fear I'd lose my credibility. I'm hesitant to make my next statement for this very reason, but I'll stop with this: When my initial impressions post on the Quickemo HE-500 mentioned a 15-20% increase in soundstage, after careful listening to tracks that test soundstage, it's more like double the soundstage to be honest. I even did a semi-object test where I played the same part of a song with the same volume through the Emotiva with and without the Quickie. Then I moved my hands closer to the cups to the point where I could hear my hand affecting the sound. I did this with a mirror and the distance for Emotiva alone was like 2.5 inches, whereas with Quickeie it was like 4 or 5 inches.

My theory on this is that the sound with the Quickie is much more refined and smooth. This allows your ears to hear past the main sounds that used to be distracting. This makes everything much more transparent and revealing. You start hearing more subtle sounds and better decays as well. I think soundstage has a lot to do with how revealing and transparent a headphone is. I also think this why the HD800 is touted for its large soundstage due to its revealing nature.

I have not heard anything like this really since just getting a DAC/Amp and not using the headphone jack in my computer. There are major improvements all across the board, which is quite unprecedented in this stage of audiophilism. Improvements in details, transparency, soundstage, imaging, and just refinement across all frequencies. Now of course, maybe the Emotiva is just a bass slam producing machine and just isn't that great in any of those other areas when compared to other amps, but I highly doubt that due to the number of positive reviews of it on here. Because this improvement is all so shocking and unbelievable to me, I'm going to refrain from posting any more ravings of the combination until some others can independently verify what I'm hearing. I guess I got about a month to wait before I can really release my excitement.

One last note. My friend came into town this past Thanksgiving and brought his HD800 for me to try. All I had to drive was a Bottlehead Crack, and I didn't have the Quickie at the time to compare directly the Quickemo HE-500 with the HD800 on Crack, but from memory I have to say I'm much more impressed with the Quickemo HE-500. I honestly believe it has better transparency, soundstage, and details than the HD800 on Crack. Now I have no doubt in my mind with a better amp the HD800 will reign supreme in those areas even over the Quickemo HE-500, but Crack is supposed to be a decent pairing with the HD800 already. The Quickemo HE-500 is like the soundstage and details of the HD800 with bass impact and body that brings life to music.

I also ordered a Koss ESP950 electrostatic headphone this Cyber Monday for 40% off at $600. It came in today, and I have to say it's very fast, airy, and has a decent soundstage. It had mid-bass, but lacked sub-bass. Great value overall at $600 for both amp and headphone. Then I switched over to the Quickemo HE-500 and it just completely blew away the ESP950 in pretty much all departments other than speed. Especially the bass, which I thought was sufficient on the ESP950 until I heard it on the Quickemo HE-500. Not only paling in comparison in extension and quantity, but also definition. I'm about to connect the Quickie to the E90 amp that came with the ESP950, and see if it can work its magic like it did with the Emotiva. We'll find out soon if the Quickie is a godsend to man, or just happens to be a divine pairing with the Emotiva.
