Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion

I just received them and while I have only spent a a little time listening so far,  they really do have a "wow factor."  For the fellow asking about comparison between these and the mk3's,  they do have a similar sound.  Very similar actually to my ears.  The improvements for me are build quality,  slightly more detail and comfort and a ton more soundstage. (T50rp)

I do have somewhat of an obscure question.  Is there any information regarding the max wattage/mlwattage that 400i's can take without damage?

More than you ears can stand without damage!
I have seen different numbers from 1 watt to 1.5 watts. At that level the will be well in excess of 120 db.

Thanks for the quick reply.  So impossible to blow with a portable amp,  its good to know when letting friends try out your stuff.

  One more question.....

Really enjoying the 400is....incredible clarity. I'm hearing things I've never heard before, in music I've listened to many times.

So, I have a pair, with the 1/8" pin connectors, not the screw-in connectors. Anyone have a recommendation for a replacement cable with a straight 1/4" on the end?

I'm not really diggin' the 1/8" angled plug.

Thoughts?

Thanks

many have gone with HD-700 cables since they use similar 2.5mm plugs but the HD-700 jacks have a flat spot on them that is not needed with the HE-400i

wouldn't take a chance since its not just the watts but too much distortion from a over driven device that could also damage the drivers

Hi guys,

I have been looking around but I was just wondering if there is a general consensus on what the best replacement pads for the HE400i are? I just found out that one of mine has come unglued. If the replacement ones were a tad thicker that would be a plus. The stock pads hurt my ears after a few hours.

There's no general consensus of any of them being "best", and the prices of the pads vary a bit as well. What's your price range?
The whole topic has been extensively discussed in the thread, and the search is your friend.

I'd honestly suggest avoiding these cables, they are complete crap. Actually, I guess if you are truly looking for cheap, it doesn't get much cheaper.

I have that amazon linked cable, and it's horribly cheap quality. It feels like a cable that came from a kids toy. The red rubber part just feels like it's worth pennies, and the rest of the covering is plasticy and terrible.

They are cheap in price, but you get what you pay for...not even worth the low price in my opinion. Should mention however my cable seems to still function fine with no issues...

I'm getting my impact cable tomorrow or Monday - should have some impressions on that pretty quick.

Might be a driver issue then.

Just for the sake of my own curiosity can you describe the screeches further, which songs/parts? :p

FFIV's Theme of Love, piano collections: about 57-59 seconds in (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qT8fJ940AS4) there's a rattling that produces static sounds for short bursts of less than a second. 2:07-2:18 the rattle and static is prominent enough to be a part of the song itself ):. 2:49-3:00 has some of the same things going on.

I've listened to the Spotify extreme version as well, which produce the same thing. Let me know if you hear anything similar!

Yeah, initially I rolled my eyes due the YouTube-link :p (Do people actually listen to such sources, when paying 200$+ for headphones?)
I'll try the Spotify version when I get off work.

Lovely setup, but I've always wondered how the volume matching goes!

Thanks! Volume is no problem in this setup. I've put both HA-200 at full volume and use the volume control on the DACmagic. My other DAC with balanced outputs doesn't have volume control though so will need to think about a solution for that.

Edit: Just realized that my wife is going to kill me when she sees this stack in our living room lol. Good thing I'll be off to Germany for a few days and will leave before she gets home......
