Are these just permanently sub $300 headphones now? Sucks for the people who bought them for way more than that doesn't it? and its not Very confidence boosting for someone considering to purchase their $2400 HE-1000's or $900 Edition X's. they are a Chi-Fi Company after all, whats to say they randomly decide to sell the Edition X's for $500 one day. Permanently.

Atleast when I'm buying Focal Elear, I know it wont just random drop to $3-400 one day.

They sold the HE-400i during the holidays last year for the same $250.00 before returning to their regular $499.00 MSRP in January.  About 6 months ago they lowered the MSRP to $449.00.

I would imagine they will return to the $350.00 to $400.00 retail range after the holiday, just as they did last year.

However if they ever do randomly sell the HEK for $500.00, count me in...

Well, Buydig has them for $249 bundled with a fiio q1. The fiio itself is for $70 on amazon. so that makes them worth around $180.
And I doubt the price'll go back up to 350-400. I'm pretty sure it'll stay sub $300. In any case, It means either hifiman are charging us way more than they are supposed to, or they're insanely generous. Even on chinese websites such as taobao they're consistently sold around the $200-250 mark.

So your question was rhetorical then???

They had similar sales last year and returned to their normal price after.

Yes if you need a Fiio Q1 with your HE-400i that is a very good deal.

And as far as what they are suppose to charge.  That is up to them.  Whether we buy them at that price is up to us...

Yes it was rhetorical. and yes its up to us to buy, hence I was saying that I wouldnt be confident buying their higher end headphones anymore.
If they're selling something at half price once a year, It means its really worth half price.

I am sorry.  When I originally answered your question I assumed you actually wanted an answer.

I was unaware you just wanted to complain about Hifimans pricing.

Now that I do, time to move on...

Merry Christmas

I know it's irritating if something you've paid a lot for falls in price, but that's life, and it doesn't mean it's only worth the half price - or at least if it does mean it's only worth the half price, it might also mean that the competitors are not worth what they're charging.

Are the 400i better, worse, or the same quality as their competitors? Most seem to think they're better than most competitors around the $450 mark, so then surely they're worth it, even if they're being sold for $250.

Do people generally EQ these cans even though they are considered somewhat neutral?

They sound pretty good with a flat setting to me. Thinking of maybe boosting the bass just a tad (2-3db).

On my laptop, I use (sometimes) a +5db boost at 20hz. Fills out the bottom end nicely. The bass boost on my e12a also does the trick. On the other hand, I'm also happy to listen au naturel

Fiio Q1 be enough for these ?

Do you need a portable solution?

Decent amp for these in $100-$200 range? Any need to stretch budget higher in order to drive them properly?

They're not difficult to drive. Are you after a desktop or portable solution?
For the desktop, the Schiit Fulla 2 look good and decent value.
