Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion

On the newer HE-400i with the 2.5mm connectors did they change the driver design? On some of the pictures of the older model the magnet array on the back looks completely different, the new array looks more like the HE-400s with just some vertical bar magnets (at least mine does that I got during the $300 sale) can anyone confirm this change?

It’s upgrading time again and I’m considering the hifiman he 400i’s as a companion can for my sennheiser hd 700.  Are there many aspects of this headphone that surpass the hd 700? I’m mainly looking for a can with great bass and hopefully faster decay than my hd 700’s, if these are it, please let me know.

I added the 400i to my HD-700 and I think I'm keeping both. Check out my previous comments in this thread. They sound different, The 400i is more relaxed, the HD-700 is more exciting. The HD-700 has a more refined bass, the 400i is lush, but sometimes acoustic upright bass can sound as electric bass. Both are great headphones for the price!

No, they are the same drivers.

The more I listen to these the more I come to the realization that I don't really need my HD600 anymore. Its crazy to think that I might actually sell them because I thought I'd keep them for a long time. With the 400i and my Sony Z7 I haven't used the HD600 much at all and to think I'm going to sell them is sad as they're the first real quality headphone I bought. While others have come and gone the good old 600 has always been there but I think its finally time to part ways.

yep, these pushed my HD650, tube amp and SR225e out the door.  Sort of sad in a way, but I'm digging the simplicity, and having the qualities I liked about both in a single headphone.

I think that 500mW is plenty for them to sound good. I have a small SMSL sApIII desktop amp and it has a more power than 500mW but I like the sound from my small C&C BH portable amp more and its around 400mW or 500mW on high gain.
I want to step up from my current DAC (creative X-Fi platinum) and amp (running through a 1973 Kenwood receiver, no idea what it's rated for). Would the smsl sd 793ii be a good choice with the 400i? The schitt stack is tempting but I don't think I need to drop that much for what I'm looking to do.

They sound good out of most stuff. Get a nice portable dac/amp like the oppo ha2 or cayin c5dac for good bang for buck and portable usability.

Never heard the SD 793II but the few I've used sound good and for a good price. I have a Schiit Vali and I use the sApIII more, it has a cleaner sound than the Vali imo.
