Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion

Sure...

The 400i brings a considerable better balance to the table. The mids are the real deal on the 400i and the signature is fun but always seems under control in it's presentation.

The he4 had more bass and treble with some recession on mids. Somewhat of a V or U shaped signature. I had some great times with the he4. The sub bass was a real treat when plugged into my vintage Pioneer. I'm pretty sure that Daft Punk loosened a few of my molars on that setup. But I grew away from that signature because I longed for better mids.

The 400i answers that call for better mids and I really do enjoy it. While the he4 was a bear to drive well, the 400i is a breeze. It does scale with good current though.

I was that user :)

The LCD and he400 or 400 and 400i?

The LCD vs the 400i in terms of everything other than bass like soundstage, imaging, mids, and highs

I'd take the 400i. You'd get better sub bass extension with the lcd2.2 pre fazor but it's a very heavy hp. The 400i is all day comfortable and has impressive sub bass extension also.

@SoAmusing777 Basically this. Yes, you do get better sub-bass extension with the LCD, but the comfort drawbacks are definitely not worth it. The LCD is not only heavy, its headband puts a lot more pressure on your head than the 400i's headband does.

As for your other post, soundstage is definitely smaller on the LCD. Not so sure about imaging. As for mids and highs, while I think the extension on the LCD's aren't nearly as great as on the 400i, the LCD's are undoubtedly detailed in those frequencies. But it's not like the 400i is any less detailed in the mids and highs.

IMO you should just get the 400i's. They're also a lot cheaper too compared to the LCD's.

There are aspects of the pre fazor lcd2 that I really loved. But the design choices being made by hifiman are "smart" and Audeze needs to get on board. I just don't like wearing a football helmet with a brick strapped to the top when I listen to music.

Wow pretty unanimous then. 250$ Savings is nice too. Guess the LCD just bests it in bass then. Why is there always a roll off in sub bass?

I know, but I meant in general. Why do headphones roll off when it gets to the lower frequencies? Still the choice is to go with $450 HE400i's over $650 + shipping for LCD 2rev2 pre fazor? Hopefully I won't miss too much bass.

Just wondering, is this through the tour that HFM will be starting or will HFM directly send you a review sample like they have done for several others here?

400i vs hd650...

First off, I love the hd650. I've had it for years and it's the ONLY hp that I haven't sold. The mids are some of the best in the game. If you listen to vocal-centric music, the mids of the 650 should be on your short list. The 650 also offers a fairly nice ability to "sale" with better gear. I've heard this hp on at least a dozen amps. Some of the best matches for it are: Asgard2, lyr (haven't heard the lyr2, should be an improvement), several Audio GD amps including the Compass and Compass2, Vali and Magni are also pretty good. BUT...if you want to take the 650 to another level, put it on the Bottlehead Crack...wow.

Then enter the 400i. Compared to the 650, the 400i has better sub bass hands down. There is better extension, weight and texture. The 650 offers more mid bass which does make for a nice musical presentation, but the real bass notes can some a little bloomy and one note. The bass offered by the 400i are mult-faceted and do a better job sounding like actual instruments.

Speed and decay are better on the 400i. The 650 will sound a little muddy and sluggish on complex quick passages where the 400i is able to match the speed and timing of those passages with planar magnetic ease.

Comfort is essentially a dead heat. I'd give a slight nod to the 650 because it's somewhat lighter and has larger ear pads. The 650 is a little harder to drive than the 400i and need just about one more click on the pot to get correct volume matching between the two hp's.

In my original review, I gave the 650 the mids crown. But now that I've discovered the grill removal trick on the 400i, the gap has close considerably in the mids departments. Since taking the grills off I've found myself listening to the 400i addictively. Heck, I haven't even picked up my hd800 in several days.
