The 400i brings a considerable better balance to the table. The mids are the real deal on the 400i and the signature is fun but always seems under control in it's presentation.
The he4 had more bass and treble with some recession on mids. Somewhat of a V or U shaped signature. I had some great times with the he4. The sub bass was a real treat when plugged into my vintage Pioneer. I'm pretty sure that Daft Punk loosened a few of my molars on that setup. But I grew away from that signature because I longed for better mids.
The 400i answers that call for better mids and I really do enjoy it. While the he4 was a bear to drive well, the 400i is a breeze. It does scale with good current though.
