Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion

The thing that sealed the deal for me between these two was when my brain finally adjusted to the different experience of planar bass, the bass just envelops you and gets you really grooving into a great song.  That, and the fact that I can plug the HE400i straight into my iPhone and it sounds awesome, instead of needing a Lyr to make the HD650 sing.

This. Not only is the 400i the best sounding headphone I have heard (so far) it sounds great out of my dragonfly 1.2! This means I can wear it portably around the house with my phone doing chores! This is an awesome headphone.

Question for you people: I'm a long time enjoyer of the HE500, but recently I've decided to sell. My other primary can is the Grado RS1.

My question is: going forward I know I'd like to keep a Hifiman in the stable. Should I get an he400i or 560? My amp is a MAD ear and I've got an audio-gd compass incoming. I'm wondering if I should stick with the slightly mid- centric sound I like or whether a 560 would be worth 1. The SQ improvement and 2. The contrast to my RS1.

thoughts?

Shame you missed the $299 deal on HE-400i. In my opinion HE-400i is better value than HE-560.

I own 560 for more than a year and enjoy them greatly. Excellent great sound stage, out of head experience, truly excellent cans.
560 are good for 90% of music I listen (and I listen to ALL kind of music, you name it).

But I had to by Fostex TH-600 for music which asks for more bass.

I heard that HE400i had smaller sound stage which cannot be changed. But you can equalize bass of HE560, it works with these cans (for me ifi micro ican does this fine).
So it's up to you to choose :)

Wow seems like everyone in here is raving about the 400i, what's so good about it? I had a chance to listen to it couple days ago at my local shop.
But it was just with my LG G3 phone, they didn't have any amps there and I didn't bring any either.  It sounds tiny and really low even when I turned my G3 volume all the way up.
So I couldn't really tell how good it sounds.

What should I do?

Listening to 400i using some descent amp would be fine :)

Hmm, weird. My iPhone drives my he400i plenty loud. Half volume is a good quiet volume, 70% is prime rock out volume, 90% is "irresponsibly loud" and I can't even put them on at max volume.

Yea it's weird.  And then I tried out the HD650 and for some reason that headphone sounds a  bit louder than the 400i, but still low.  And I think the HD650 is like 300ohm right?

I own both those headphones and I noticed that too. Just out of curiosity I tried running both out of my Cowon S9 dap and the 400i was quieter at the same volume level as my hd650.

It's called efficiency boys.

If you want a sidegrade from HE-500 get HE-560.

If you want a downgrade get HE-400i

HD650 is pretty efficient for 300 ohms. It's easier to drive than 250 ohm Beyers by a lot.
