You will most likely have to send it in to HiFiMan for replacement (of the entire driver). I don't think it's possible to replace just the diaphragm - unless you produce orthodynamic drivers yourself!

  I just tried this mod on my HE-500's. I did one side, listened to one modified/one not modified.  I liked how the sound changed, so I modified the other. When I plugged them back in, to my surprise I had no sound through the right channel. I took apart the phones, and to my horror saw a hole in the metal plane

I can only assume I have screwed up this phone. <punch face>

Does anyone know if this is reparable?

Been there.  I explained what happened to HiFiMAN customer support, and they said they'd "fix" it for $130.  I don't know if they fixed it, or just sent a different refurbished HE-500.  Given only a week passed between HFM receiving the damaged pair and them shipping back, I have to assume it was a different unit, esp. since their factory is in China.  Either way, I paid it.  No problems with the pair I got back.

They don't have black felt either anywhere. Just white, brown and funky colors like red and purple.

Difficult to say since the page doesn't say much about it. I use a 1mm thick felt and sticky double sided tape. Make sure you cut precisely. You don't want to obstruct the openings in the grill because that will kill way too much treble.
 
And if you haven't already got the Audeze micro suede ("vegan") pads, then I strongly recommend them. They are expensive, but fully worth it. Mount with double sided tape and you'll have super sub bass!

Thanks! I already got the Focus Pads two weeks ago and I'm not that handy so I will pass up on the Vegab Pads for now. Although they are super comfy, so I might if I find a pair second hand in Europe . Is it hard to fit them on?

Fitting the Audeze is as easy as you want it! If you have a HiFiMan ear-pad ring you can put that into the Audeze pad and mount it like that. However, my suggestion is to use double sided tape as that will seal MUCH better and this ensures sub bass performance. Using double sided tape requires cutting the tape into appropriate pieces and then mount the pad directly to the cup. Easy in my book, but not as convenient as using the rings perhaps.

Rereading threads on mods, I'm feeling a bit foolish.  Simple (and probably dumb) question:
 
When you install the Focus-A pads, do you align the thickest part of the pad down (so it's under your ear), or align the thickest part of the pad to the back (so it's behind the ear)?
 
I always configured it so the thickest part was 'low' under the ear; but reading through the above-linked 560 mod (Jerg mod threads are always a fun read!) it sounds like they should be installed with the thickest part in the 'back'?

The idea with angled pads is to angle the driver towards the ear so that sound seems to come a little more from the front. In other words, you have the thickest part behind the ears. This goes for all headphone pads I have seen.

I moved them around and getting used to the feel of them with this orientation. I'm not trying to A/B the 2 orientations, but I do like them this way.

A question about these polyester felt mods, to do the acoustics better by absorption of sound.

Polyester felt have the ability to generate static electricity and may interfere with the magnetic field of the driver unit, causing noise.

Some have problem with static noise.

I dont know but in theory it could generate noise or maybe damage the driver unit.

And same with velour pads. They generate static electricity too.

Do someone know anything about this?

I have never experienced static electricity from the headphones at any time even though I have felt both on the driver and the pads.
