I hope you don't drink tea mutabor.

I'm not exaggerating. This Russian Orthodox fundamentalist has put us on the verge of a full-scale war with Ukraine. It was very very close especially in spring. There is Russia vs Ukraine war but it doesn't have official status. More than 5000 died at minimum, dozens of thousands left their homes.

I remember seeing them blessing weapons. That was a huge What and I just felt that if we replaced the Orthodox priest with a

fundamentalist ISIS preacher, there isn,t much difference in their mentality.

Same **** different clothes. Not sure which so called g-d they are worshiping.

For the love of Dog, when did Jesus say/do anoint weapons with Holy Water? Whatever happened to the Prince of Peace?

Reminds me of Denis Diderot's quote about "Man being truly free when the last king (Putin) is hanged with the entrails of the

last priest(Orthodoxy)". The French were definitely ahead of the curve when it came to Church-State matters. Ordinary

Russians/Ukrainians suffer while Putin and the Priests never have to worry about their next meal.

We might have been ahead and now our journalists are paying for it...

Pheidippides the courier who ran from Marathon to Athens collapsed on the ground as soon as he delivered the news of victory over the Persians to the Athenians.

Its the ultimate sacrifice a journalist can make and that,s to die delivering what he was supposed to do. In the tradition of Pheidippides we will celebrate their work and that they died doing what they were supposed to do and loved to do.

The enemy want us to be on our knees but we will stand up and that would be the best tribute to their sacrifice and while I might not be the most ardent of Francophiles,

this is the nation that gave us the battlecry of Liberty,Equality,Fraternity and the nation with the best record of winning wars in the history of the world.

The terrorists are vastly underestimating the French if they assume they can strike fear in them. This is Paris today in support of Hebdo.

I am in Australia and we had that cafe shooting in broad daylight in the Sydney CBD in December where one terrorist killed 2 people and held hostages for 17 hours

before being bought down.

No one panicked, no one stopped going to the CBD and Christmas shopping went in full swing and thats the best revenge we can have.

Not a single person I spoke to worried instead we stood up and went about our business.

Man today is a sad day for democracy... A couple of terrorists shot 12 people in Paris, in one of France' key historical satirical newspapers, because the paper had published caricatures of Mahomet. Among the dead are some of the greatest satirical comic strip artists that were part of my childhood. Such a sad sad day.

It's a sad sad day in a sad series of sad days that's been going on for much too long. It wasn't the first and sadly but likely won't be the last.

I'll probably catch flak for this, but maybe we should start to reconsider the means by which we're trying to "export" democracy to foreign cultures and countries. I can't help but feel, that for the last decade or so, we've been repeating the same thing over and over, but without sustainable success. At the same time, we witnessed the watering down of democracy in our own cultures and countries, in the name of protection from evil, yet effectively not replacing but complementing that evil with another.

I just hope that those in power have good reasons why they're still flogging that same old horse. Or more specifically, better reasons than eye for eye and tooth for tooth.

Agreed, actually.

It seems that often the difference between different ideologies is primarily one of transparency. And democratic systems often fall on the lower end of the scale in terms of transparency. Going back to times of the cold war, Second World countries were openly socialist, openly communist, and open about levels of freedom. First World countries, on the other hand, would mask and hide any aspects of those things behind closed doors, while providing lip service to democracy and freedom.

So, it seems that the mission of exporting democracy has an underlying goal of getting other countries to pretend to be democratic rather than being honest about who they are and what they believe. And I'm not sure that really accomplishes anything.

On the other hand, I do believe that it should be a worldwide goal to abolish tyranny, while simultaneously trying to stave off open tyranny in our homeland. It seems that that's a more important goal than lipservice to democracy. And often, exporting democracy is veiled by the idea that it will help abolish tyranny, but democracy should be a secondary consideration to anti-tyranny rather than the goal.

My two cents, and sorry for bordering on politics...

Well of course we are paying the price of Colonialism. And the US and Europe had it coming in a way. But the people who pay have nothing to do with the guys who wanted to dominate third world countries. Charlie Hebdo is an anarchist leftist clearly anti colonialist paper. And more importantly the people behind terrorist organizations have IMO less than noble motivations.

Greetings from your residential Swede. Happy new year and all that jazz.

Thanks in spades to those who are in support of my "getting better" from all this **** that's been happening around me. I'll live. I think. I try not to think about it too much. Day by day, baby steps, and all that.

Been getting to know my new best friend, the MBP. It's great. I've grown accustomed to reinstalling OS X because of all the crap software I install and mess with, just to start messing up the system. I know, think the Apple way, not the Linux way - everything that is supposed to be tampered with is available to tamper with, and that which isn't available isn't meant to be tampered with. I know. But it's fun to just **** around, and OS X isn't hard to reinstall. So...

Oh and I've started writing children stories for my kids. Sometimes when I put them to sleep, I have to freestyle a story about a few characters for them. Those characters are the ones I'm about. Nothing serious, more like "Bear Yohann and Little Lisa travels to Planet Poop with a magic box, and there is an evil witch trying to grow roses made of candy, which the poop people don't like" and so on. Childish and funny for them, and not that hard to freestyle. Sometimes the stories get quite good and I've long planned to write them down, which I've started doing now.

Anyway, it's soon time to go to bed. Apparently I am going to have to be a chairperson at a unit meeting tomorrow. God I hate speaking in front of people. I guess I'll just have to do it. Oh well.

Been trying to migrate a web server from a remote host to our own servers. There's a transfer going on tonight, which I left unattended at work. Hopefully it will transfer without problems, otherwise I'll have to work night shift some of these days. I wouldn't mind it, migrating a server at night time isn't as stressful as it sounds (most of the time I could relax in front of Netflix since it's a 37 GB transfer), but it's always sweeter when things go as planned.

I'm thinking of buying a new bag for my new MBPr. Or actually, maybe two of them. However, yeah, that's probably my next project. I already have a few that fits it good, but I'd like at least one dedicated laptop messenger bag with a protective pocket for it. Some of these days I'm probably going to stop hauling it to work, but not anytime soon, it's a pretty sweet machine to haul around. Makes me feel so "hipster". LOL

Still haven't bought any of the headphones I've been thinking of, nor the ones that's been suggested to me. Right now the money is being spent on other stuff, and saved for later projects like for instance a home.

Grandma died quite recently. Dad went to france for the funeral. He was in Paris the day after the terrorist attacks.

Oh well, that's it for now.

Hang in there.

It sounds like life is at least interesting, which is enough reason to hang in there I think.

It sounds like you're enjoying your new Mac, and have the right attitude to software. :)

I gave my old laptop to my daughter for Christmas, and built a new one. I say "built", because I basically bought a low end Dell on ebay, and swapped the motherboard, the processor, and the hard drive. I put in a motherboard with discrete graphics, the fastest i7 that would fit in the socket, and an SSD.

The first time I took it apart and put it all back together, the battery terminals wouldn't line up. The motherboard was maybe a millimeter off the right position. So I took it completely apart and put it back together a second time, and made sure the battery would line up with the motherboard.

Now a couple of weeks later the built in speakers start sounding like crap, and I find out that the little audio board is different between the two motherboards. And that in order to replace the audio board, you have to remove the motherboard. So this weekend I have to disassemble and reassemble the whole machine a third time to replace a $6 audio board.

It's an adventure, but the net effect will be that I'm getting a pretty high end laptop for around $500. So it's OK.

Oh, and as a backup plan to the built in speakers, I also ordered a pair of foxL v2 purist portable speakers.

That sounds great. Oh speaking of children's books, my daughter got me one...

I worked overnight IT operations for a few months in 2012. Pretty enjoyable actually, though the hours eventually started to drag on me, and the management of my company started trying to micro-manage the overnight shift, which drove me back to days in a different department.

Speaking of bags, I got a Dakine backpack for my daughter for her laptop, and one for myself as well. Best bag I've ever owned. The inside of the gadget pockets is lined with a really soft fleece. And every pocket has dual zippers. Highly recommended.

Oh well, that's it for now.

Buying a home is quite a project, as is maintaining one. That's where most of my income is going lately as well. I got new paint and carpet recently, and am having the bathrooms remodeled in a month or so. Then I'm pondering central air, a new kitchen, and a new deck. It'll probably be 3 or 4 years before it's all nice. And then there will probably be new stuff to fix.

Renting is much easier. Though financially buying can sometimes be better.

Glad your dad is OK, and hope your grandma went peacefully.

Best,

Harley.

I'm currently hunting for a home so I understand where both you guys are coming from. Wish the market around here wasn't so artificially bloated.

What a punishing time to find a great deal now. The currency exchange rate for MYR and USD is atrocious..... But......................................................

Honestly, I don't know what to do. Loans to pay, car routine maintenance that's overdue just-in-case money. But $160 ain't too bad.... Right?
