I've got a pair of MDR-SA3000's that the right channel stopped working on last night.

I recently replaced the jack (broke it) and suspected that i had messed up somewhere, but after pulling them apart and testing for continuity from the jack to the left and right drivers, everything seemed fine. I plugged them back in to a source during the test and the right channel was working again.

I figured 'this is definitely something with the wire', and put them back together again, only to have the right channel stop working.

So i pulled them back apart and tested for ohms on the left channel:

then i tested for ohms on the right channel.. and got nothing. 0 ohms, no link it seems.

can I save these or should I just never buy sony again

(I've already paid for replacement phones from sony once before when the right channel broke clean off. I seriously do take really good care of these, just having really crap luck it seems...)

any help or advice would be appreciated...

It's shorted? Definitely looks like a problem with the cable/jack.

Check the jack again, the housing could short the channel. Use some electrical tape to isolate the channels from the ground inside the jack.

Also, if the wire got very hot while you soldered the new jack there is a possibility that the insulation was "damaged".

thats the thing, i have no continuity between the two points on the right channel, which i'm taking as there being no short (am i correct?).

i already made sure there was no continuity between the channels on the jack (that was my first thought as well). The cord honestly seems fine.

if i remove the cables form the right channel, it should definitely get an ohm reading between the two points correct? If so i'll try this tonight.

If i still get no ohm reading (its not even registering 0, theres just _no_ reading currently) does that mean the driver is totally screwed?

well, i removed one of the wires and tried to get an ohm reading, still nothing.

up for any suggestions.

Looks like the driver's dead.

If that is the case your DMM should read OL, as in open loop or infinitive resistance because most probably the coil wire burned through.

Sorry about that: :/

what were they usually plugged into? did you check for DC offset off your headphones out?

nice to see that the sa3k shell is made of ABS...but yeah, your driver's most likely dead. but doublecheck for DC offset off your source, it might very well be a headphones toaster.

desolder the wires from the driver, test the driver again.
