Wow...The HP 100 is really has that great of a sound quality.

I guess i just assumed the HP 598 was the best sound quality because it was open back and because it received such as rating, even on this site of audiophiles.

I was interested in the M50 too because it recieved very high rating as well from this site. However, i was told it's bass is a bit overpowering and drown out the vocals of the mids, which I don't think will be very good for music like Two Step From Hell?

It's a bit better overall (other than soundstage, and it isn't much worse), especially in bass. You seem very willing to go open, in which case the AKG Q701 would be a better choice than the HP100 and the 598.

The M50 isn't incredibly high rated on this site.  On Amazon and other sites, it is very popular and is surrounded by a lot of hype, hype which isn't really met.  It's still pretty good in the price range, but not as good as you would be lead to believe.

I just got the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro-80 this weekend to demo, so this is more first impression stuff. I do like them better than my M50s, although I do think the M50s are about an equivalent price/performance value. After all, they are a good bit cheaper. This is going from memory, though. M50s are at work, not at home.

For school usage, the M50s are more portable because they are DJ-style headphones that can be folded up. The Beyers would take up a good bit more room in a backpack.
