I have tried to look at every review I can on the HEDD TWO. There is one superb review. The remaining are "it is a reasonably decent headphone" to " it is not a very good headphone". A lot of negitive reviews.

I loved the ONE. Would someone who loved the one hate the TWO? How different could it be?

It is a bit polarizing, my city had a local meet last month at many people loved the HEDD 2. I personally enjoy it's brilliant treble but some people found it's lacking bass slam and dynamics

I can't compare to 1 though since i only tried it for several seconds, can't stand the comfort and weight

The past few weeks I have been rotating through my setup of headphones, switching back and forth between my solid state and tube amps... until I dialled in on a setup I really am enjoying for the past week.

And it's the Heddphone 1.

I've committed the head-fier sin of adding just a touch of EQ (I know some of you guys don't even think twice but these days I try to avoid EQ) - a very simple boost of 1-2 dB from 5 - 20 KHz. And this is the most basic of EQs, the default DSP that comes with foobar.

The DAC is Soekris 1421, a nice clean R2R DAC; to the Topping A90D as a preamp, which keeps the signal nice and clear and adds a slight amount of a bubble to the soundstage. And then to the La Figaro 339 tube amp, with the Cetron 7236, a very fast and almost solid-state tube acting as the power tube. The Tung-Sol 6SJ7GT mesh tubes help keep the sound lean (as far as tubes go) and preserving the speed and transparency of the Heddphone 1. A copper / silver headphone cable also helps with preserving the treble.

I was really sick of the Heddphone 1, adding a bit of EQ up top really adds to the quality of the treble - the AMT drivers handle treble really well, and it can sound extremely realistic to my ears. Nothing else that I have really compares to this setup. This setup outresolves the Focal Clear, HD800S, Koss ESP/95X, LCD-X etc.


I was really looking forward to getting the Heddphone 2 next year with its driver and tuning upgrades; I suppose I can manage for a few months with the original until then!

Is the Soekris a particularly dark sounding DAC? I never thought the H1 was lacking at all in treble, really only a bit under the Arya Stealth which is itself pretty bright.

Soekris DACs are remarkably linear for R2R; when I moved from the Topping D50 (a quite bright sabre ESS DAC) the Soekris is slightly drier in the treble area (cymbals don't sizzle quite as much as the over-the-top Topping DAC) but it is not at all like the typical R2R sound.

The Heddphone 1 has quite a big valley in the 6 Khz area (20 dB difference from its peak in the 3-4 Khz area) which as a drummer, I can notice quite readily. I didn't up the EQ that much, maybe even just to compensate for the tube amp's slight roll-off. But adding the EQ to my setup was the final step and really enhanced my overall enjoyment of the chain.

I've also been reaching for the HEDDphone ONE lately, and when I say lately..... we're talking several months now.

It's a weird thing to say because I originally returned them in favor of the Arya Stealth, but now here we are, and the Arya isn't getting nearly as much head-time. A big part of that is fixing H1's headband so it's comfortable, the other part is a bit more complicated. I guess when I'm tired after work in the evening and I just want to lean back and relax, I don't want to be bombarded with attention-grabbing sound. I just want good, pleasing, smooth and gentle sound, and the H1 is all that and more.

It's like slipping into an old easy chair that's contoured to fit you perfectly, sipping on a favorite brandy knowing you've got plenty more in the kitchen, and kicking up your feet adorning a pair of soft wool socks. That feeling but in a headphone.
