More details to follow, but I'm not diggin the LCD XC for Metal...

I loved LCD-4 for metal as well

The downside was that they were still a bit heavy for me, but that is a subjective thing and I didn't test them in a perfect environment. Still would love to experience them a bit more sometime :smile_phones:

What are you powering LCD-XD with? I remember that they love some good clean power to juice them up.

Running the iCan Micro SE, 4W into 16ohms should net at least 3.5ish into the 20ohm XC

I'm going to try my NFB10ES2 here soon, as it'll run a LOT more power into 20Ohms, upwards if not 6W but I have to swap into one of my cables so I what ever changes I hear will be impart the amp and cable change

Is the bass on the Phi really less visceral & authoritative than the original?
Does the softer treble takeaway any of the sparkle from the original as well?

I'd have to hear them both head-to-head on my amp to say for sure on the bass question. I really don't know for certain.

As far as the treble goes, it's really hard to knock the Phi. The treble is absolutely incredible and better than the original for sure.

IMO, you're talking about two headphones that are very, very close to perfect. The Abyss is the only headphone I've heard that never gets beaten by a "genre specialist" headphone - I never listen to it and think, "This is great, but this music would sound better on an HD800 (or insert any other headphone here)." It is absolutely spot-on with anything you throw at it.

Kinda wish I pre-ordered the ÆON to save that $100. Lol. Ah well. I'm not that patient to wait for a pre-order anymore.

These are hands-down the most comfortable headphones currently in production. They sound pretty damn good too for a fully closed back pair.

So whats the general opinion for best headphones for a meshuggah, opeth, gojira and all round metal fan. Under £800 would be great!

There isn't a general opinion on what is the absolute best, what kind of signature do you like?

For example, for those bands I like to have some fizzle and sparkle in the treble, but what is just so nice for me, might be too much for others.

I would def like a fizzle and sparkle in the treble, something that gives music energy

Oh

Well, there are many options, from open to closed back, from full headphones to in ear monitors, all that matters is what you're personally looking for.

I love how ie800 plays metal, especially Gojira, but it is an in-ear monitor rather than a full over-the-ears headphone.

open or closed headphones would both be equally fine for me. Actually preferable open backed as I dont own one of those yet!

Let's start with what do you have?

I like the Beyerdynamic DT 880 my self, but the 990 for me had too much energy up top and not enough mid range body for metal, made everything too thick, If you like Sparkle up top and appreciate a nice mid range as I do, a Grado RS2e is really nice! Or you can get a Nhoord Red built or a Magnum Symphones V7 l, I still think the Grado Style/sound is super enjoyable with metal and rock!

I've been looking for a pair of headphones for a little while, and I figured I might as well ask the good people of this thread!

I mostly listen to melodic death metal, heavy metal, power metal, death metal and metal core.
Budget wise, I was looking to spend around 2000 NOK (~$250), but if needed I can spend more. Prices here in Norway are generally higher than most places, so keep that in mind.

I tried and returned the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro. The bass was good (in a perfect world it could have had a bit more quantity), mids were a bit recessed and the highs were too sibilant for me.

I got a Schiit Magni 2 Über coming in, DAC I'm not sure about yet, but will probably end up with a Modi 2.

Hi.

The Meze 99 Neo should work well (or a pair of Meze 99 Classics secondhand, to save a few bucks). The Hifiman He-400i are a good pick as well, but I'm not sure how much they cost in Norway. They go on sale for $250 in the US all the time.

Those are two popular choices in that price range. The Focal Listen is also very good, but they're not as bassy as the DT990, so I'm not sure if they have the right sound signature for you.
