HeadAmp Pico Power: Pre-Order Thread
Jul 21, 2012 at 6:52 PM Post #109 of 730
Good news everyone.  The next prototypes of the Pico Power circuit boards are here, and I believe the amp has now been finalized.

The op-amp is OPA140, for those who have asked.  This provided the best mix of low noise, low distortion, near rail-to-rail voltage swing, and low current draw to keep battery life high.  The discrete output buffer uses 12 hand-matched, thru-hole components per amplifier.  The gain switch is now 3-way, with settings of about 0dB, 10dB, and 20dB.  The idle current draw of the amp is about 14mA, so battery life will depend on the mAH of the 9V batteries.  About 21.5 hours with 300mah NIMH and 36 hours with 500mah Li-Polymer.  Total PSU capacitance was also increased from 1320uF in Protoype #1 to 2720uF in Prototype #2 to 4000uF in the final version.  Thanks to new parts that keep getting smaller.

At this point, I'm just waiting for the enclosures to be machined and the special order parts to come in (the last of those expected end of September).

Justin... if you have any finished by September... I'd be happy to take one to the Head-Fi meet at Cambridge, England

Hope to see the leather case soon~

BTW, I read the technical spec of Pico Power, but since I am not familar with the electronic engineering stuff, I just wondering how the latest prototype sounds like.
