sennheiser hd 380

shure srh840

audio technica ath-m50 and the m50s ( whats the difference anyways )

Ultrasone HFI-780 or 580 ( could you tell me the difference between the two models)

True clarity?  SoundMAGIC HP100s.  Astonishing clarity, yet smooth.  Bass is pretty close to neutral (i.e., far from Beats), but they have a lovely sound.  Available at the Micca Store for $200.

M50 is coil cable, M50s is straight cable. I would recommend the M50 family from your shortlisted candidates. Find a shop that allow you to audit them, your ears make the final decision ultimately.

Hello! Welcome to Head-Fi!

Shure SRH-840 has strong at around 100hz but only at that point. Lower bass are lacking for basshead. It bas smooth & forward mids. Highs are clear. Details are good but lacking in soundstage.

ATH-M50 & ATH-M50s are the same. ATH-M50s has straight cable where as ATH-M50 has coiled cable. I find these sound bassy but not so well controlled. Mids are recessed & highs are okay. Soundstage are lacking.

As for HFI-580 & HFI-780, the HFI-580 has more bass but the highs can be agressive for some music. HFI-780 has slightly less bass, but it's much more balance..

Just my 2cent :)

Hi Billson,

I'm Singaporean too, nice to meet you.
Do you prefer the 840 over the M50?

Cheers.

whoelse - we dont have a store here that carries everything

billsonchang - so which one would be your pick?? how are the senn's???

anyone else have a opinion

For bass, definately the HFI-780. As for Sennheiser, the only few that I like is the Sennheiser Momentum, HD439 and HD800. I find older model of Sennheiser line sound slightly grainy.

M50 are highly talked here mainly because it is best for starters who are looking for headphone at it's price range. Why? Easily driven, build like tank. Suitable for both dj & studio. Does not leak sound. Portable as it's foldable.

HFI-780 vs HFI580 really depends on what you like. Since you like something bassy but not too much, I think HFI-780 is the way to go. SRH-840's bass aren't as full as HFI-780. :)

If you see my signature, you can see I have the 840 :)

I mentioned the M50 because the TS mentioned rap ,hip hop ,r&b, pop  and most people said M50 is move dynamic than 840?
Very likely, 840 and M50 are not too far off in term of SQ but if the TS want to wear it on the move? The 840 is HEAVY for that purpose.

840 suppose to be smoother then M50 which is something I might like. I said "might" because I have never listen to M50 yet, most people I know who have the 840 and M50 prefer the M50.
I both the 840 used from a guy and he is keeping the M50 too. I am sure there are many who prefer the 840 over the M50 too.

I happen to audition both. I find SRH-840 sound better than ATH-M50 mainly because it has smoother overall sound & wider soundstage(compare to ATH-M50). As for comfort, ATH-M50 has better comfort. However, sound wise, SRH-840 are better. :)
