Head-fi's Recommended Digital Sources call for nominations
Jul 11, 2004 at 7:34 PM Post #124 of 142
Given a recent exposure to some high end sources at the FL meet, and impressions from those compared to my modded Toshiba, I will nominate the Vinnie Rossi modded version of the Toshiba SD-3950 as easily competitive in the $250 - $1600 range (and this is being conservative with respect to the upper bound).

the soundcard EMU 0404 (99 euros)
is a good sounding card,
tops all soundcard competition at that price
for music

The Cary 203/200 needs to be edited to 303/200 BTW.

In the Universal Players under $6,000...the Esoteric DV-50 is a top contender (I've never heard anything better (including pure Redbook comparisons).

...and I know this thread got started in April, but since August (in the under $4000 Redbook range, I don't think anything can touch the Meridian G08!

Not against the rules, but please check the first post, especially the text in bold, this is a rather unorthodox recommended list. In principle, you can nominate any source for its price range or higher, but you should have been exposed to players of that unit's price range or higher, and in your opinion your nominated player is among the best sound available, or it's very competitive, within the price range you nominate it for.

To be honest, I don't quite understand how this thread works.
Since no one seemed to have mentioned Benchmark Media DAC1, I will nominate it for <$1k category.

I nominate the Apogee Mini-DAC for the <US$1000 category. I call it the "anti-Benchmark"

Certainly, but one question. The tri-vista to be added in the 10K category for which format, CD, SACD, both? (Edit: I added it in both, but wanted to make sure that's what you meant)

Interesting case, because the fact that its price went up in US$ going above $10K doesn't mean that player would automatically become competitive among the players in the next higher category, which is the cost no object one. Noone has submitted it for that category, so I shouldn't move it upwards. An easy adjustment would be to shift the category to <$10500 or so, but I think is ok to leave it as it stands so far. The amount is still very close enough to $10K, and it's supposedly very competitive in that category.
